The hotel disagreement later changed when Jorginho said Roan had not asked anyone to approach his family and that the matter was closed. Here is what each dispute involved—and what the available accounts do and do not establish.
What happened with Chappell Roan?
The controversies are related by the public questions they raise about celebrity privacy and access, but they are not one continuous incident. In 2024, Roan described unwanted attention from fans and drew a line between work and private time. That September, she faced criticism after declining to endorse a presidential candidate in an interview. In March 2026, a footballer’s account of a hotel encounter involving his family and a security guard prompted a response from Roan and further statements from those involved.
| Dispute | What it concerned | What the reporting establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Fan boundaries, August 2024 | Roan’s statements about unwanted touching, harassment, stalking and demands for attention. | Her statements and comments were reported; they are her account of behavior she said she experienced, not independent verification of every incident. |
| Political endorsements, September 2024 | Her decision not to endorse a candidate in an interview, followed by a clarification that she planned to vote for Kamala Harris. | Forbes reported her remarks and clarification, as well as backlash; no poll or measure of its scale is established here. |
| São Paulo hotel, March 2026 | Jorginho’s allegation that a guard confronted his wife and stepdaughter after the child recognized Roan. | The participants gave differing accounts. Jorginho later said Roan had not asked anyone to approach them and that the matter was closed. |
Why did Chappell Roan speak out about fans?
In August 2024, Roan said fame did not give strangers a right to touch, follow, harass or demand her attention. She also said intrusive behavior had affected her family and friends. She drew a distinction between public work and private time: “When I’m on stage, when I’m performing, when I’m in drag, when I’m at a work event, when I’m doing press…I am at work,” she said in a statement reproduced by British Vogue.
She also wrote, “Women do not owe you a reason why they don’t want to be touched or talked to.” The point was not that she opposed people enjoying her music; it was that recognition or familiarity with an artist’s work does not amount to personal familiarity or permission to approach. The Guardian reported her comments about people shouting at her, demanding photos or hugs, and acting as if knowing her songs meant knowing her personally. She said in TikTok comments, “I’m allowed to say no to creepy behaviour, OK?” The Guardian’s account and ABC News covered the statements.

Those reports establish what Roan said and how she described the behavior; they do not independently verify every incident she referred to. Her argument was about consent and boundaries, including outside a performance or work setting.
Why did her comments about political endorsements cause backlash?
In September 2024, Roan told The Guardian she did not feel pressured to endorse a presidential candidate and urged people to think critically and vote. The debate was about her declining to offer an endorsement in that interview—not about her endorsing both candidates.

She later clarified that she planned to vote for Kamala Harris while continuing to criticize political positions and policies. Forbes reported both her original remarks and clarification, and described audience backlash to the initial comments. That coverage does not establish a single, unified response or quantify how many people objected. Forbes’ explanation provides the account of the exchange.
What happened at the São Paulo hotel in March 2026?
Jorginho’s initial account
Footballer Jorginho said his wife, Catherine Harding, and his 11-year-old stepdaughter were staying at the same São Paulo hotel as Roan. In his account, the child recognized Roan, looked to confirm it was her, smiled and returned to her seat. He alleged that a security guard then spoke aggressively to his family and that the child was upset. This is Jorginho’s account of the encounter, not an independently established record of every detail. The Associated Press reported his claim.

Roan, Harding and Duvier respond
Roan said she had not seen a mother and child approach her and that the guard was not part of her personal security. She apologized to Harding and the child for their discomfort, saying, “I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children,” as reported by Pitchfork.
Harding said the guard’s approach overstepped a boundary and described him as intimidating, while saying she did not know whether Roan had sent him. Pascal Duvier, the guard, said the interaction was his responsibility but that he was at the hotel on behalf of another individual, not as a member of Roan’s security team. Duvier described his approach as calm and well-intentioned; his statement said, “I take full responsibility for the interactions on March 21st.” Rolling Stone Australia reported Duvier’s statement and the differing accounts.

Jorginho’s later clarification
Pitchfork reported that on April 13 Jorginho said Roan had not asked anyone to approach his wife or daughter, that the parties had spoken privately, and that as far as he was concerned the matter was closed. That later clarification addressed Roan’s involvement and the status of the disagreement; it does not make every detail of the original encounter undisputed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is established—and what remains disputed?
- Established in the reporting: Roan made the 2024 statements about fan boundaries; Forbes reported the endorsement remarks and her later Harris-voting clarification; and the people involved in the hotel incident made public statements.
- Attributed accounts, not settled facts: The precise tone and sequence of the hotel interaction, along with what the guard understood about his authority, come from statements by Jorginho, Harding, Roan and Duvier. The reporting does not establish every detail independently.
- No measured scale: The cited coverage does not provide a named study or statistic measuring public opinion about these disputes or the prevalence of the behavior Roan described.
Why these controversies are often grouped together
Each episode raises a different question. The fan-boundary statements concern privacy and consent; the endorsement dispute concerns whether an artist should publicly signal a political choice; and the hotel encounter concerns security, responsibility and competing accounts of a specific interaction. Taken together, they show how expectations of celebrity access and accountability can collide, but they do not establish what all fans or celebrities think.
