The 2021 24/7 Wall St./24/7 Tempo ranking of Disney flops put Mars Needs Moms, The Alamo and The 13th Warrior at the top. Its order reflects one specific calculation—worldwide ticket sales compared with production budgets, adjusted for inflation—not audited studio losses. There is no single official, current league table of Disney’s biggest box-office bombs, so the ranking below is best read as a historical reference rather than an October 2026 consensus.
How this Disney box-office ranking was made
In 2021, 24/7 Tempo examined 632 feature-length Disney films and ranked 50 flops by comparing inflation-adjusted worldwide ticket sales with inflation-adjusted production budgets. It credited The Numbers for its movie-industry data and used historic ticket prices and the Consumer Price Index in its adjustments. The 30 titles below reproduce that source’s ranks 30 through 1, reordered from largest stated loss downward. The ranking’s reported losses are results of that budget-versus-ticket-sales method, not audited figures for what Disney ultimately lost.
“Disney” can mean different things in different lists: films made by Disney, films released by a Disney-owned label, or titles from studios Disney later acquired. This list follows the source’s Disney-film dataset; it is not a definitive taxonomy of every film associated with Disney. Rankings that use a different inclusion rule may produce a different set of titles.
The 30 biggest Disney flops in the 2021 ranking
- Mars Needs Moms — The ranking’s largest budget-to-ticket-sales shortfall. 24/7 Tempo reported an inflation-adjusted production budget of $177.5 million, worldwide ticket sales of $45.7 million and a loss of $131.9 million.
- The Alamo — The 2004 historical drama placed second. 24/7 Tempo reported a $129.7 million production budget, $35.3 million in worldwide ticket sales and a $94.4 million loss.
- The 13th Warrior — The 1999 adventure film ranked third, with a reported $199.8 million budget, $111.7 million in worldwide ticket sales and an $88.1 million loss.

Why other lists rank Disney losses differently
A film’s worldwide theatrical gross is not the amount its studio receives. Theaters keep a share, and production budgets generally do not include marketing and distribution costs. Studios may also earn revenue later through home entertainment, licensing or other rights, so subtracting a production budget from a theatrical gross is only a rough comparison—not a full profit-and-loss statement.

For example, Filmsite.org gives John Carter an approximate production budget of $263.7 million and worldwide gross of $284.1 million, yet estimates its loss at $112–200 million (or $153–274 million adjusted for inflation). Its figures, stated through 2025, illustrate why a gross larger than the production budget does not establish profitability. Filmsite estimates The Lone Ranger lost $160–190 million, with an inflation-adjusted estimate of $216–256 million; its approximate budget was $225–250 million and its worldwide gross $260.5 million. These are estimates, not audited final studio accounts.
Filmsite’s estimates for Mars Needs Moms also differ from the 2021 ranking: it lists a $150 million budget, $39 million worldwide gross, and an estimated loss of $100–144 million, or $140–201 million adjusted for inflation. The 2021 source reported different budget and ticket-sales figures and used its own inflation-adjusted comparison. Mixing these estimates into one ranking would combine unlike methods.

Filmsite.org estimates The Marvels lost $199–237 million, or $205–245 million adjusted for inflation, against a $270 million production budget and $206.1 million worldwide gross. Those figures, stated through 2025, are estimates rather than audited results. A list based on estimated full-cycle losses could therefore rank titles such as John Carter, The Lone Ranger, The Marvels or Strange World differently from a budget-to-ticket-sales list. A fair comparison requires recalculating every film using the same definition, data and inflation method.

For pandemic-era releases, theatrical gross can be especially incomplete. Theatre closures, simultaneous home releases and streaming income that is not reported in a comparable way make it harder to judge a film’s total commercial performance from ticket sales alone. A current title also should not be placed in an all-time ranking before its theatrical run is complete.

When comparing any “biggest Disney movie flops” list, check whether its figures are nominal or inflation-adjusted, whether it measures only box office against production budget or estimates a wider distribution lifecycle, and what films it counts as Disney. The label “box-office bomb” is an editorial description, not a standardized accounting category.
