Here are 15 standout female characters from anime released since 2020, chosen for character development, agency, emotional range, memorability, and influence on their stories. This is a subjective editorial list, not an official ranking or a claim of universal fan consensus. The cutoff is October 4, 2026. A character qualifies if she appeared in an anime installment first released in 2020 or later; that includes characters who originated earlier in manga or other media, and characters who first appeared in anime before 2020 if they feature in a qualifying continuation.
Rankings and polls offer useful context, but they measure different things. FandomWire published its own 2026 ranking of ten female leads, while Anime Corner’s annual polls report votes from readers selecting among seasonal finalists. Neither is a standardized measure of character quality. The order below is my judgment across the criteria above, with room for different genres and roles.
15. Anna Yamada
Role: Protagonist of The Dangers in My Heart. Anna’s place here reflects the appeal of a character whose presence and relationships give a quieter romantic story its personality. She ranked first in Anime Corner’s 2024 female-character poll, with 8.85% of the reported vote share.
14. Kurumi Tokisaki
Role: A prominent character in Date A Live. Kurumi brings a distinctive presence to a series built around supernatural conflict and romance. Anime Corner’s 2024 poll placed her second, at 8.71% of its reported vote share.

12. Nazuna Nanakusa
Role: Lead character in Call of the Night. Nazuna’s offbeat persona makes her a memorable presence among recent anime leads. FandomWire ranked her fifth in its 2026 feature.
11. Kaoruko Waguri
Role: Protagonist of The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity. Kaoruko placed second in Anime Corner’s 2025 poll, with 8.35% of the reported share, and sixth in FandomWire’s 2026 ranking. The two different editorial formats both give her notable visibility, without making either placement a verdict on all viewers.
10. Jolyne Cujoh
Role: Protagonist of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean. Jolyne’s anime installment first appeared in 2021, so she qualifies under this list’s release-date rule even though the character originated earlier in manga. FandomWire ranked her tenth among its 2026 selections.

8. Ruby Hoshino

7. Suletta Mercury
Role: Protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. Suletta broadens this list beyond romantic comedy, fantasy, and slice-of-life stories. Crunchyroll News included her among examples of women whose strength takes varied forms in its 2025 feature.

Role: Protagonist of My Dress-Up Darling. Marin’s enthusiasm and clear sense of what she enjoys make her an immediately recognizable lead. She ranked fifth in Anime Corner’s 2025 poll with 7.35% of its reported share, and seventh in FandomWire’s 2026 ranking.

4. Momo Ayase
Role: Protagonist of Dandadan. Momo is one of the clearest cross-list choices: Anime Corner ranked her fourth in both its 2024 and 2025 polls, with reported shares of 7.89% and 7.54%, respectively. Role: One of the central characters in Spy × Family. Anya earns the top spot for memorability and for the unusual perspective she brings to a story built around a makeshift family. Her placement is an editorial choice, not a poll result or an official distinction.
How to read the rankings behind this list
FandomWire’s September 20, 2026 feature says its order reflects narrative brilliance and influence within each series. Anime Corner’s 2024 and 2025 annual rankings instead report poll results from nominees drawn from seasonal top-five characters. These are different kinds of evidence: an editor’s evaluation on one hand, reader votes within a stated finalist process on the other. Anime Corner’s percentages describe those poll tables only; they are not broad measures of popularity or quality.
For reference, Anime Corner’s reported top five in 2025 were Maomao, Kaoruko Waguri, Yor Forger, Momo Ayase, and Marin Kitagawa. In 2024, they were Anna Yamada, Kurumi Tokisaki, Maomao, Momo Ayase, and Frieren. These results help explain why some characters appear prominently here, but the final order remains subjective.
