His family announced his death through the POLG Foundation, which he helped establish, and said it was caused by POLG mitochondrial disease. Frederik was the son of Prince Robert of Luxembourg and Princess Julie of Nassau—not the reigning monarch or a direct heir to the throne.
What happened to Prince Frederik of Luxembourg?
Frederik died in Paris, France, on March 1, 2025. His father, Prince Robert, announced the death in a statement published by the POLG Foundation. The family said Frederik had lived with POLG disease, a rare genetic mitochondrial disorder.
Prince Robert described the family’s final exchange as characteristically humorous: “In true Frederik fashion, he left us collectively with a final long-standing family joke.” In the same statement, he remembered his son’s capacity to encourage others: “Part of his superpower was his ability to inspire and to lead by example.”
Frederik was born to Prince Robert of Luxembourg and Princess Julie of Nassau. News reports commonly described him as a Luxembourg royal; he was Prince Robert’s son and a cousin of Grand Duke Henri.

When was Frederik diagnosed with POLG disease?
ABC News reported that Frederik was born with POLG disease and was diagnosed at 14, after his symptoms became more pronounced. His father’s account described how difficult the condition could be to identify because it can appear in different ways and affect multiple body systems.
Prince Robert said Frederik spoke with family members on February 28, 2025, Rare Disease Day—the day before his death. That personal detail comes from his father’s account.

What is POLG mitochondrial disease?
The United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) describes POLG disease as a mitochondrial disorder caused by changes, or mutations, in the POLG gene. Mitochondria help cells produce energy; the family’s explanation described POLG disease as interfering with that function and potentially affecting several organs and systems.
The family’s account listed possible effects involving the brain, nerves, liver, intestines and muscles, as well as swallowing and vision. These are broad descriptions of possible effects, not a list of symptoms that establishes a diagnosis or a record of everything Frederik experienced. The family said the disorder’s varied presentation and multiple-system effects made it difficult to diagnose.

In 2025, the family statement said there was no treatment, “let alone a cure.” ABC, citing UMDF, reported that care can help manage symptoms and quality of life, while there is no cure. Those statements distinguish symptom management from a cure; they do not establish a current, comprehensive account of clinical options. Anyone seeking medical information should consult current clinical sources and qualified health professionals.
How Frederik supported POLG research
Frederik helped establish the POLG Foundation in 2022 and served as its creative director, according to the foundation. It says its work includes creating research tools such as DNA-derived sequences, induced pluripotent stem cells and transgenic mouse models. The United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation separately confirmed collaboration with the POLG Foundation on a remote video-assessment study.

The POLG Foundation says it funded four major research projects totaling more than $3.6 million. That is the foundation’s reported figure on its Frederik page, which also looks back on the organization’s first three years; it is an institutional claim, not an independently audited total. The foundation also reports work on a post-mortem tissue project and collaboration on the remote video-assessment work.
The foundation page said an international prospective natural-history study was expected to launch in 2025. The sources cited here do not establish its current enrollment, completion or results.

What the family meant by “300 million”
Prince Robert’s statement referred to 300 million people worldwide affected by “similar diseases.” That wording is broad and does not give a count of people with POLG disease. It should not be presented as a POLG-specific prevalence figure.
In announcing his death, Prince Robert wrote: “Frederik passed away on 1 March 2025 in Paris, the City of Light. A light has been extinguished, but so many others remain.”
