What is the real case behind the series?
Netflix says the brothers fatally shot their parents in their Beverly Hills home on August 20, 1989. They were convicted of first-degree murder in 1996 and sentenced to life without parole. Those outcomes are distinct from the competing explanations presented at trial: the brothers said abuse motivated their actions, while prosecutors argued they sought the family fortune. Netflix’s series overview and its guide to the series’ perspectives describe that conflict.
Monsters is a fictional, scripted drama, not a definitive account or an independent finding about disputed allegations. Its finale is intentionally ambiguous, and the series moves among perspectives. Co-creator Ryan Murphy described the creative aim as “to show different complicated points of view” in a Netflix Tudum roundtable published January 17, 2025. That is a statement about the show’s approach, not evidence for either account of the case.
