The investigation concerns Mahogany Jaquise Jackson, a 20-year-old woman from Jasper, Alabama, who Birmingham police said was found shot and killed in Birmingham on February 26, 2024. Police announced warrants for seven suspects two days later; ABC News reported that an eighth suspect was arrested on March 1. The charges and accounts described below are allegations and reported court testimony, not findings of guilt. The latest procedural update established here is dated December 16, 2024; the case’s later status is not established by the cited sources.
What happened in the Mahogany Jackson case?
Birmingham Police said Jackson was found shot and killed in the 1700 block of Laurel Avenue on February 26, 2024. In a release dated February 27, the department said it had presented information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office and announced warrants for seven suspects. The police release identifies Jackson as 20 and from Jasper, Alabama.
The title’s reference to an assault being taped describes an allegation reported from testimony, not a court finding. The Associated Press reported that a Birmingham homicide detective testified about recordings allegedly made by suspects and submitted by a witness. The AP’s account does not establish that a jury found the recordings or the alleged events proved.
Why reports say both seven and eight suspects
Seven refers to the initial warrants announced by Birmingham Police on February 28, 2024. ABC News reported that Airana Robinson was arrested on March 1 as an eighth suspect. The counts describe different points in the investigation, not a contradiction.

ABC News and the AP also reported that Jackson sent a message to her family saying she had been kidnapped and asking for help. ABC described it as a text to her mother; the AP attributed its account of a family text, including Jackson’s location, to then-police chief Scott Thurmond. Those reports are not a complete transcript of the message.
What charges did police initially announce?
The February 2024 police release listed different warrants and charges for each of the initial seven. These are the charges as described in that dated announcement; they should not be read as a current docket or as evidence that anyone was convicted.

The city’s release said the suspects were held at Jefferson County Jail without bond at that time. That is a dated description, not confirmation of their current custody or bond status.
What did later court reporting add?
In September 2024, the Associated Press reported that a grand jury upgraded five suspects’ charges from felony murder to capital murder. In a report published December 16, 2024, the AP said prosecutors had filed notice seeking the death penalty if any of the eight defendants were convicted of capital murder. The update does not mean that a death sentence was imposed, and it does not establish that all eight had identical charges.

The latest procedural information established here is that December 16, 2024 report. It does not establish subsequent hearings, trial results, or a final disposition. The AP report is the source for the later grand-jury and prosecution developments.

The AP reported testimony from Birmingham homicide detective Mark Green describing videos that he said were taken by suspects and submitted by an unnamed witness. According to the AP’s account of that testimony, the recordings showed Jackson being kidnapped and physically and sexually assaulted before three suspects drove her to where she was shot and left. This is an account of testimony and allegations; it is not an independent finding that the events were proved at trial.

At the time, Thurmond, then Birmingham’s police chief, called the case “undoubtedly one of the most heinous acts I’ve seen in my career. It’s absolutely disgusting,” according to the AP. That was the chief’s characterization, not a judicial finding.
