How to fix Nginx RTMP publishing error: 403 Forbidden

Work through the likely causes of an NGINX RTMP publish 403: app-path mismatch, ordered access rules, callback authorization, and the running module/configuration.

A 403 Forbidden error while publishing to NGINX RTMP means the publish attempt is being rejected somewhere in the server’s authorization path; the exact cause depends on your running configuration and logs. First compare the encoder’s server, application, and stream name with the RTMP configuration. Then inspect ordered publish access rules and any configured on_publish callback. Do not loosen access controls until you know which layer is denying the connection.

1. Confirm the RTMP server, application, and stream name

The documented RTMP URL form is rtmp://rtmp.example.com/app[/name]. The application component must correspond to an application {} block in the server configuration. Compare the publishing client’s settings with the configuration and confirm the hostname, port, application name, stream name, and any expected URL arguments. The module’s directives documentation describes the RTMP URL format.

  • Check the server address and port against the instance receiving the publish attempt.
  • Check that the client’s application path matches the configured application block; a stream name is not a substitute for the application name.
  • Confirm whether the server expects URL arguments or credentials that the client is not sending.

Make the smallest correction: fix the client URL or the intended application configuration. Avoid changing unrelated playback or proxy settings before verifying which server receives the request.

2. Check publish access rules in order

Search the effective RTMP configuration for allow and deny directives, including rules inherited from enclosing configuration contexts. The directives reference says rules are checked in order of appearance; do not assume a later allow overrides an earlier deny. Confirm the action is publish, not play, and compare the rule with the source address the RTMP server actually sees.

application myapp {
    live on;
    allow publish 127.0.0.1;
    deny publish all;
}

This project-documentation example permits publishing only from the local host. It will reject a remote encoder unless the RTMP server sees that connection as 127.0.0.1. Treat it as an illustration, not a general-purpose configuration. See the directives reference and project repository.

  • If an intended publisher is excluded, correct the narrow rule or its placement for that publisher’s actual source address.
  • Do not change allow play or deny play to solve a publish rejection; those actions govern playback.
  • Do not leave allow publish all in place as a fix. If you use it briefly for a controlled diagnostic, restore the intended restrictions immediately.

3. Trace any on_publish authorization callback

If the application configures on_publish, the callback service may take part in the publish decision. Follow one attempt from NGINX to the authorization endpoint. Check that the endpoint is reachable from the NGINX process, inspect its logs, and verify that it receives the stream-identifying fields and any token or shared secret your implementation expects. The module’s callback documentation explains that the HTTP response is used to decide whether publishing is allowed.

Correct the failing side of that exchange: for example, restore endpoint connectivity or adjust the callback’s validation only if its logs show a mismatch. An RTMP password or stream key is not necessarily checked by NGINX itself; that depends on the deployed configuration or callback. Do not assume a callback is configured, or that it returns a particular status, without checking.

4. Verify the running NGINX binary and RTMP module

Make changes to the configuration used by the running service, not a similarly named file belonging to another installation, container, or NGINX binary. Confirm which RTMP implementation is installed before changing module-loading or package settings.

  • F5 NGINX’s RTMP module instructions describe a packaged dynamic module for NGINX Plus, including loading the module, testing configuration with nginx -t, and reloading. Those steps are specific to NGINX Plus.
  • NGINX Open Source installation documentation covers compiling third-party modules and dynamic loading. Build and loading steps must match the installed NGINX version and module; the documentation cautions that third-party module stability is not guaranteed.

Use the commands and package guidance appropriate to your distribution and module build. A configuration test can catch syntax or loading problems, but passing it does not prove that the publish authorization rules or callback will accept a particular publisher.

5. Correlate logs for one publish attempt

Record the time of a single retry and correlate it with the RTMP server’s logs and, if configured, the callback service’s logs. Look for the selected application, observed client address, callback request and response, and any configuration or module errors. There is no single log message established for every 403 condition, so identify which layer rejected this attempt before making another change.

An HTTP 403 shown by an unrelated website or reverse proxy is not necessarily the same event as an RTMP publishing rejection. Confirm that the client message and server log entry refer to the same publish attempt. Do not infer a particular RTMP protocol status mapping from the words “403 Forbidden” alone.

Quick diagnosis by likely cause

What to check Evidence to inspect Smallest corrective action
URL or application mismatch Client server, port, app path, stream name, expected arguments; configured application {} block. Module directives. Correct the client URL or intended application configuration.
Publish access rule Effective allow publish and deny publish rules, their order, and the source IP observed by the server. Module directives. Adjust the narrow rule or its order to match the intended publisher.
Callback or credential decision Whether on_publish is configured; endpoint reachability, request fields, validation logs, and response. Module callback documentation. Fix the demonstrated connectivity or validation failure in the callback path.
Wrong module or configuration instance Running binary and service, loaded module, active configuration, and any build or load errors. NGINX Plus module instructions; NGINX Open Source installation documentation. Use the active configuration and installation steps for the module flavor actually deployed.

Common troubleshooting mistakes

  • Adding a broad allow rule: it can hide the cause while exposing the publisher endpoint. Diagnose the observed source address and rule order instead.
  • Changing playback rules: play and publish are different actions; change the rule governing the rejected operation.
  • Assuming every installation is NGINX Plus: packaged dynamic-module steps for Plus are not a universal recipe for community NGINX Open Source builds.
  • Assuming a stream key is automatically validated: check the active config and callback implementation to learn where credentials are checked.
  • Buying hardware to fix authorization: the documented controls are software configuration and authorization checks; no hardware replacement is established as a remedy.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a separate option if your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos rather than diagnose a self-hosted NGINX RTMP authorization error. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the videos from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera-based live streaming. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
