On Windows 11, press Windows logo key + Shift + R to open Snipping Tool’s screen-recording workflow. Select the area, choose Start, then choose Stop when you’re done. For a game or app clip on Windows 10 or 11, press Windows logo key + Alt + R to record with Xbox Game Bar.
Choose the right Windows recording tool

The steps below follow Microsoft’s current support guidance: Snipping Tool recording and editing and Xbox Game Bar recording and audio controls.
Record part of the screen with Snipping Tool in Windows 11
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu or taskbar search.
- Select Record, then New. You can also press Windows logo key + Shift + R to open the recording workflow.
- Drag to select the area you want to capture, then select Start.
- When you have captured what you need, select Stop.
- Save the recording, or choose Edit in Clipchamp to continue working on it.
Microsoft’s instructions describe this as capturing a video snip. They do not specify that the Snipping Tool workflow offers the same microphone and system-audio controls as Game Bar.
Record a game or app with Xbox Game Bar
- Open the game or app you want to record.
- Press Windows logo key + Alt + R to start recording. Press the same shortcut again to stop.
- To turn the microphone on or off during a recording, press Windows logo key + Alt + M.
If Game Bar does not open, press Windows logo key + G to open the overlay and check whether Game Bar is enabled in Settings.

Include system audio
Open Game Bar Settings, go to Capturing, and set audio capture to All if you want the recording to include system audio. The microphone toggle is separate: use Windows logo key + Alt + M to toggle it during recording.
Find and edit your recordings
Xbox Game Bar files
Game Bar recordings are MP4 files saved in VideosCaptures. Microsoft says the filename includes the game or app name and the recording date and time. If you cannot find a clip, open File Explorer and check the Captures folder inside your Videos folder.

Snipping Tool clips
After you stop a Snipping Tool recording, save it or open it in Clipchamp. Clipchamp can be used for post-capture editing, including adding captions or audio; these are editing steps, not Game Bar capture settings.
If the recorder is missing or the shortcut does not work
- Snipping Tool is not in Start: Search for it from Start. If it is not installed or cannot be found, Microsoft’s Steps Recorder deprecation guidance says to get Snipping Tool from the Microsoft Store.
- Game Bar does not appear: Press Windows logo key + G and check whether Game Bar is enabled in Settings. The recording shortcut applies to a game or app clip.
- You need a clip with system sound: In Game Bar Settings, open Capturing and select All. For microphone control while recording, use Windows logo key + Alt + M.
- You found an old Steps Recorder tutorial: Check which Windows version it covers before following it. Microsoft says Windows versions before the Windows 11 update in February 2024 continue to support Steps Recorder; it is not a current, general-purpose screen-recording recommendation for every Windows version.
