KAOS makes Jeff Goldblum’s Zeus its most conspicuous attraction, then gives him a kingdom that is already coming apart. Goldblum is magnetic as a paranoid, cruel god facing a prophecy of divine collapse—but the eight-episode Netflix series is more interested in the mortals, rival gods and political machinery around him than in making Zeus feel truly in control. That sprawling approach can be richly entertaining or, especially early on, overwhelming.
What is KAOS about?
Created by Charlie Covell, KAOS is a 2024 Netflix fantasy series told across eight episodes. It relocates Greek gods and mortals to a modernized world: Zeus rules from Olympus while President Minos governs Krete. When Zeus notices a wrinkle, he fears it signals the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy about the gods’ fall. Meanwhile, Prometheus works to turn mortal actions against Zeus. Netflix’s series page describes discord on Olympus and three mortals whose choices are destined to reshape humanity; Netflix Tudum presents the series as a contemporary twist on Greek mythology.
Covell told Netflix the starting question was, “What if the king of the gods was having a midlife crisis? What would that look like?” That premise gives the show a useful engine: divine power is immense, but its holder is insecure, impulsive and vulnerable to the consequences of his own rule.
Is Jeff Goldblum good as Zeus?
Yes—Goldblum is one of the series’ strongest reasons to watch. His Zeus has the familiar Goldblum mannerisms and timing, but the performance is not simply a celebrity turn built around charm. He makes the god’s vanity and volatility part of the same presence: Zeus can be captivating in a room and terrifying to those who depend on his favor. Goldblum described the character to Netflix Tudum as “Our Zeus is the three c’s — complicated, charismatic, [and] cruel.”

The tension in the title is apt. Zeus commands a world, but he does not command the story in the way a viewer might expect of its most famous god. His paranoia about the prophecy makes him reactive; the series gives substantial attention to the people whose lives his decisions shape and to the other Olympians maneuvering around him. Goldblum remains a major draw, while Zeus’s diminishing grip supplies much of the drama.
How does KAOS change Greek mythology?
Rather than stage a straightforward ancient-world retelling, KAOS makes mythic figures operate within contemporary structures of privilege and government. Olympus feels less like a remote realm of perfect authority than a ruling household with factions, grudges and political consequences. On Krete, Minos’s presidency places mortal leadership alongside divine power, while ordinary people are not merely spectators to the gods’ disputes.

This is an interpretive reading of the setup, not a stated creator’s manifesto: the modern setting makes old stories about power, family and resistance feel immediate. The irreverence can sharpen that contrast, but viewers looking for a reverent or closely classical adaptation may find the show’s anachronisms and comic tone distracting. A Greek mythology reference book can be useful for comparing its choices with familiar versions of the myths; no particular book has been established as an official tie-in.
Does the ensemble make the story richer or too crowded?
The large cast is both the series’ ambition and its main gamble. The Guardian’s Lucy Mangan praised the plotting and ensemble, writing, “A huge cast of characters is deployed without a single one feeling underdeveloped or unnecessary.” Her review was emphatically positive, calling the show a “masterpiece.” That is one critic’s verdict, not a consensus.

The Boston Globe offers a real counterweight: it praised Goldblum and Janet McTeer, as well as the show’s gender-fluid and colorblind casting, but found the first three episodes had “a lot of toddler energy” and could feel almost overwhelming as they introduced so many threads. TIME likewise described a comedy-politics-thriller blend, with Olympians resembling a divine crime family; it praised the casting, dialogue and world-building while noting that the premise has precedents and that the large cast asks for patience.
Those reactions point to the practical question for a viewer: do the intersecting stories feel like a web of consequences, or like too many introductions competing for attention? If you enjoy ensemble narratives that take time to establish their factions, the breadth is part of the appeal. If you want a tightly focused Zeus-centered drama, the diversions into mortal and divine lives may make the series feel less commanding than its lead character suggests.

Is KAOS worth watching?
Watch it for Goldblum’s unpredictable Zeus, the collision of myth with modern political life, and an ensemble willing to let mortals matter. It is a better fit for viewers who enjoy dark comedy and sprawling power struggles than for anyone seeking a solemn myth retelling or a single-hero narrative. The reviews cited here disagree on whether the crowded opening is an asset or a hurdle, so the early episodes are a reasonable test of whether the series’ tone and many plotlines work for you.
For context rather than a verdict, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 78% Tomatometer from 54 critic reviews and an 83% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 ratings when accessed on October 4, 2026. Those figures are a dated snapshot of that platform’s ratings, not a measure of universal audience opinion.

Spoilers: what happens at the end of KAOS?
Spoiler warning: this section reveals episode eight’s ending.
Netflix Tudum’s official finale explainer says Prometheus is free, Hera is calling for troops, and a mortal has escaped the Underworld to walk Earth as a prophet. Zeus is shocked by the episode’s revelations, while Prometheus sits on Zeus’s throne. These are major shifts in the balance of power, not a tidy restoration of order. The explainer describes the finale’s events; it is not an independent critical assessment.
