Reid Fliehr, known professionally as Reid Flair, died in Charlotte on March 29, 2013, at age 25. The cause was not established in the first reports; a later report on the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s autopsy said he died from heroin toxicity, with two other medications contributing through additive respiratory depression.
What was known when Reid Flair’s death was announced?
WWE announced on March 29, 2013, that it was saddened by Reid Flair’s passing and identified him as the son of WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair. The notice did not state a cause of death. WWE’s announcement.
That day, Wrestling Inc. reported a statement from Ric Flair’s agent, Melinda Morris Zanoni, confirming that Reid Fliehr had died in Charlotte. The statement said, “The investigation into the cause of death is ongoing,” and described him as “an incredible son, brother, friend, and professional wrestler.” It also asked for privacy for the family. Associated Press reporting carried by CBS said police found 25-year-old Fliehr in a Charlotte hotel room and that the medical examiner’s office would determine the cause. That was the initial account, not the later medical finding. CBS’s report of the AP account.

What did the medical examiner report as the cause of death?
On June 14, 2013, WBTV reported the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s autopsy finding: the cause of death was heroin toxicity. The report also said clonazepam and alprazolam were not present in toxic or lethal amounts, but were contributory because they could add to respiratory depression. In the medical examiner’s wording quoted by WBTV: “Although not present in any toxic or lethal amounts, clonazepam and alprazolam would be additive in respiratory depression and thus contributory to the death.” WBTV’s June 14 report.
This later finding should not be confused with what was known on March 29, when the family representative said the cause remained under investigation. The available reporting does not establish intent or provide a complete account of Reid’s medical history.

Who was Reid Flair beyond the headlines?
Reid Fliehr was a professional wrestler who performed as Reid Flair, and Ric Flair’s son. The family representative’s first statement also remembered him as a son, brother and friend, placing his death in the context of the people close to him rather than only the circumstances reported that day.
In remarks reported after the autopsy finding, Ric Flair said, “I hope people remember his laugh, his spirit and his love of life.” Reid’s mother, Beth Fliehr, spoke about his plans to stay busy, train and return to Japan. “All he wanted to do was stay busy, train and keep his mind off the old triggers, then go back to Japan,” she said. “He was doing really well there.
