Watcher is a 2022 psychological thriller about Julia, an American actress who moves to Bucharest with her husband and becomes convinced a man in a nearby building is watching her. Chloe Okuno builds the suspense around Julia’s isolation, a city gripped by reports of a serial killer, and the question of whether anyone will take her fear seriously. It is a strong fit for viewers who prefer slow-building unease to a thriller driven mainly by plot twists.
What is Watcher about?
Julia and her husband, Francis, have moved to Bucharest. As she struggles to feel at home, Julia notices a figure watching her from a neighboring building. At the same time, reports of a serial killer stalking the city make her increasingly alert to danger.
The setup turns ordinary encounters into sources of uncertainty: is Julia responding to a real threat, or is isolation intensifying her fear? That uncertainty is the film’s central engine, rather than a puzzle to solve quickly.
How does the film create suspense?
Julia’s isolation
Julia is a newcomer in a city where she does not feel connected. The language barrier adds to the distance between her and the people around her, leaving her with fewer easy ways to explain what she sees or feel understood. The result is suspense rooted not only in the possibility of danger, but in the difficulty of getting other people to recognize it.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The uncertain threat
The film keeps attention on Julia’s point of view. Her fear may be justified, but the people around her do not necessarily share her interpretation. That gap makes the viewer weigh what she notices against the possibility that others will dismiss it. The city’s serial-killer panic gives her concern a wider context without making the situation feel simple or settled.
Atmosphere over momentum
Watcher is best approached as a slow-burn thriller. Its appeal lies in mounting unease and the pressure of being watched, not in constant action. Viewers looking for a tightly packed chain of revelations may find its measured approach less satisfying; those who enjoy psychological tension may find that restraint effective.

Who made Watcher, and who stars in it?
Chloe Okuno directed the film and co-wrote it with Zack Ford. Maika Monroe stars as Julia, alongside Karl Glusman and Burn Gorman. AGC lists the U.S. release date as June 3, 2022. IFC Center lists the running time as 96 minutes; runtimes can vary between catalogues. AGC’s film page and IFC Center’s listing provide the production and release details.
Is Watcher worth watching?
Consider it if you like suspense built from a character’s vulnerability, an unsettling atmosphere, and doubt about whether her warnings will be believed. Its Bucharest setting and Julia’s sense of disconnection are integral to that tension. If you want a more plot-forward thriller that prioritizes brisk pacing and frequent turns, it may not be the best match.
