Which Val Kilmer movie should you watch first?
For comedy: Top Secret! or Real Genius
Top Secret! is the starting point for Kilmer’s screen career: he plays Nick Rivers in the absurdist musical parody, his feature debut. For a more grounded 1980s comedy, try Real Genius, where he plays the playful, brilliant Chris Knight. Rotten Tomatoes’ staff guide cites critic Paul Attanasio of The Washington Post calling the movie Kilmer’s, a useful marker of how closely the role is associated with him.
For action: Top Gun
Kilmer’s Iceman is more than a cocky rival to Tom Cruise’s Maverick. The Associated Press retrospective notes that Kilmer gave the pilot depth, making the friction between the two men more than simple antagonism. The film is the clearest choice if you want a high-profile action role rather than a deep-cut character study.
For fantasy: Willow
In Willow, Kilmer plays Madmartigan in a fantasy adventure. It is a useful counterpoint to the pilots, singers and crime-film characters that dominate his best-known roles, and a natural pick for viewers who want a fantastical setting.

For a performance showcase, choose The Doors or Tombstone
The Doors: a demanding lead role
Kilmer plays Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s film about the singer and band. The Associated Press describes the film’s reception as mixed while noting praise for Kilmer’s committed performance, so the case for watching it is the transformation rather than a claim of universal acclaim. In a 2017 interview with The Guardian, Kilmer recalled, “I was trying to sing all the songs live! Which was a massive undertaking, and we did it, but in order to hold the fort I didn’t afford myself much time to ‘be me’.”
Tombstone: a memorable Doc Holliday
Kilmer’s Doc Holliday is a tubercular gunfighter and friend of Wyatt Earp. The AP retrospective reports that Kilmer described the film as a love story between two men, which helps explain why the friendship gives the Western much of its emotional charge. Choose it for a sharply drawn supporting character rather than a conventional leading-hero performance.

For crime stories, compare Heat and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Heat: ensemble crime drama
Michael Mann’s Heat gives Kilmer a substantial supporting role as Chris Shiherlis, the trusted right-hand man of Robert De Niro’s Neil McCauley. It is the pick for viewers who want Kilmer in a serious ensemble alongside De Niro and Al Pacino, rather than carrying the story alone.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang: crime-comedy chemistry
In this 2005 crime comedy, Kilmer plays Gay Perry, a private detective whose dynamic with Robert Downey Jr.’s character is central to the comic effect. Choose it for a later-career role that pairs mystery with sharp comic interplay.

Two very different 1995 roles
Heat and Batman Forever both arrived in 1995, but they show different sides of Kilmer’s screen presence. In Heat, he is one part of a grounded crime ensemble; in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever, he plays Bruce Wayne and Batman in a colorful superhero spectacle. Pick the former for character-driven crime drama and the latter for a stylized comic-book blockbuster.
