Long Distance is the U.S. release title of Distant, a sci-fi survival film that spent years in release limbo before its reported Hulu debut in July 2025. Its premise—an asteroid miner stranded on an alien world with dwindling oxygen—makes it an appealing pick for viewers who like creature action with a sentimental streak. Whether it is a hidden gem depends on what you want from the film: critics and viewers have disagreed about its story, humor, and pacing.
What is Long Distance about?
An asteroid miner crash-lands on an alien planet and has to cross dangerous terrain to reach another survivor while dealing with a limited oxygen supply. That setup puts the film between a survival thriller and a creature-feature adventure: the immediate hook is getting across the planet alive, while the encounter with another person gives the journey an emotional dimension.
The film was directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, with a screenplay by Spenser Cohen. Its reported cast includes Anthony Ramos, Naomi Scott, Kristofer Hivju, and Zachary Quinto.
Is Long Distance the same movie as Distant?
Yes. Distant was the film’s original title; Long Distance is the title used for its U.S. release. The name change is part of an unusually long path from production to streaming, not evidence of a different film.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why was Long Distance called a lost movie?
Production wrapped in 2020, but the film’s release was repeatedly delayed. ComingSoon reported that it was removed from Universal’s release schedule in January 2024, then given the Long Distance title ahead of its Hulu arrival. It eventually premiered theatrically in Vietnam on July 12, 2024; ComingSoon reported a U.S. Hulu debut on July 3, 2025. Those stops and starts help explain why the film could pass under the radar. They do not establish why the studio handled its release that way, so “dumped on Hulu” is best understood as a pointed description of the low-profile arrival, not a confirmed account of the studio’s intent. ComingSoon’s release report covers the delays and U.S. debut; Letterboxd’s release listing records the Vietnam and U.S. digital dates.
Is it actually a hidden gem?
There is a case for giving it a chance, but “hidden gem” is a personal recommendation rather than a critical consensus. Rotten Tomatoes showed a 45% Tomatometer based on four critic reviews on the page accessed in 2026. That is a small, changeable sample—not a broad verdict on audience response. Matt Patches of Polygon praised its combination of “brains, brawn, and a sappy sentimental side,” while Brian Orndorf of Blu-ray.com found warmth in it but argued the story was too slight to command attention. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page carries the review excerpts and live aggregate.

Viewer comments on Letterboxd are similarly divided. Some praise the creature design, effects, short runtime, or Hivju’s performance; others object to the dialogue, characterization, or pacing. These are individual reactions, not a representative audience survey. Letterboxd’s film page collects those comments.
Who is most likely to enjoy it?
The premise may suit viewers looking for an accessible, contained sci-fi adventure rather than a densely explained world or a relentlessly serious survival drama. The oxygen pressure and hostile terrain provide clear stakes; the creature encounters promise action, while the reviews suggest the film also leans into humor and sentiment. If you mainly want elaborate characterization or a tightly paced, hard-edged thriller, the mixed responses on writing and pacing are worth bearing in mind.

Where can you watch Long Distance?
ComingSoon reported that the film debuted on U.S. Hulu on July 3, 2025, but that historical release date does not confirm that it remains in Hulu’s U.S. catalog today. Netflix’s Canadian listing includes Long Distance and describes it as downloadable; that is evidence of Canadian availability on that service, not U.S. availability. Streaming catalogs change by country and over time, so check the service in your region before subscribing or searching by title. Netflix Canada’s listing is specific to Canada.
