There is no definitive ranking of the best adult cartoons: critics, editors and fan polls use different criteria. This list ranks 25 adult-targeted animated series by their influence, writing, storytelling, character work and emotional range. It includes sitcoms, satire, comedy-dramas and serialized genre stories—not anime or every animated show that adults might enjoy. “Adult” describes a show’s intended audience and themes, not simply its profanity level.
The order is an editorial judgment, not a consensus score. For long-running shows, a strong early run does not mean every season is equally accomplished.
How to choose an adult animated series
Some shows work as episodic comedies you can watch in almost any order; others build character arcs or season-long plots, making the recommended entry point the beginning. The list notes each series’ comedy, story shape and emotional register to help you find the right fit.
Adult animation is broader than raunchy sitcoms. In a 2019 TIME feature by Andrew R. Chow, writer and animator Alex Hirsch said, “adult doesn’t have to mean crass and cruel—it can mean sophisticated, dramatic, beautiful and nuanced.” The picks below reflect that range.

The 25 best adult cartoon TV series
1. The Simpsons
Comedy: Character-driven family satire. Story: Mostly episodic, so viewers can generally start anywhere. Emotional register: Broad comedy with moments of warmth. Why it ranks: A foundational series whose family-sitcom template shaped what followed. Critics often single out its first ten seasons; that praise is not a claim that every season is equally strong. TIME quotes Hirsch describing the post-Simpsons era as “an arms race of different ways to copy The Simpsons.”
2. South Park
Comedy: Topical, abrasive satire. Story: Usually episodic, with recurring characters and some continuity. Emotional register: Provocative and irreverent. Why it ranks: Its fast-moving cultural commentary gives it a distinct voice. TVLine credits its shortened production schedule with helping keep that commentary fresh. Separately, TheWrap found it the most consistent across six Ranker lists it analyzed—a result of fan-vote rankings, not a measure of critical consensus.
3. BoJack Horseman
Comedy: Hollywood satire and character comedy. Story: Strongly serialized; start with season one. Emotional register: Darkly funny, then often devastating. Why it ranks: Its sustained character arc takes on depression and mental health without abandoning comedy. TVLine describes the series as a six-season run set in Hollywood; TIME includes it among shows using animation to explore mental-health themes.
4. King of the Hill
Comedy: Observational and understated, with blue-collar satire. Story: Mostly episodic, grounded in a recurring community. Emotional register: Gentle and humane. Why it ranks: Its specific setting and everyday character detail offer a quieter alternative to joke-dense adult sitcoms. TVLine ranked it third on its May 2026 list.

Comedy: Not primarily a comedy; dramatic fantasy and action take the lead. Story: Serialized, so watch from the beginning. Emotional register: Intense and dramatic. Why it ranks: It broadens the idea of adult animation beyond sitcoms, with a character-led story built for sustained viewing. The Week included it in its May 2026 selection of animated series for adults.
6. The Boondocks
Comedy: Social and political satire. Story: A mix of standalone episodes and recurring character threads. Emotional register: Pointed and confrontational. Why it ranks: It brings a sharper, more explicitly social perspective to the animated sitcom. The Week includes it among series designed for adults.

The list’s remaining selections continue the move beyond one sitcom formula: some lean on workplace ensembles, some on surrealism, and others on family life or serialized drama. The best starting point depends on whether you want a show built around standalone jokes or one that rewards watching in order.

Rankings reflect different kinds of evidence, not a single shared standard. TVLine’s May 10, 2026 list ranks 15 adult animated shows; The Week’s May 22, 2026 list selects nine series it considers designed for adults. Rotten Tomatoes’ “140 Essential Animated TV Shows” covers animation broadly, not just adult-targeted shows, and combines Tomatometer data with other lists and editorial judgment. TheWrap’s Ranker comparison analyzes fan-vote lists, which measure audience participation rather than critical evaluation.

Those lists are useful reference points, but none establishes a definitive global top 25. The Week’s selection is explicitly adult-focused; the other lists have different scopes and methods. The ranking here also does not claim to survey adult-oriented animation worldwide or include anime, which would require a broader and separately defined scope.
One broader industry measure helps put the field’s creative leadership in context, but should not be mistaken for a current adult-animation statistic: TIME reports that women made up 17% of creators and topline developers of the top 100 animated series in 2018, citing the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative’s 2019 report. That figure concerns animated series generally, not adult animation alone.
