Spoilers ahead for the final five episodes of Cobra Kai, including the decisive tournament match and Kreese’s fate.
Cobra Kai ends with a hard-won tournament victory and, more importantly, a change in how Johnny Lawrence sees the defeat that has defined him since 1984. Season 6 Part 3, released on Netflix on February 13, 2025, is most satisfying when its karate spectacle gives way to the relationships beneath it: Johnny and Daniel finally working as partners, Daniel reckoning with a more complicated picture of Mr. Miyagi, and old enemies confronting what they owe one another.
What the final five episodes pick up
Season 6 Part 3 is the five-episode final batch of the series. It resumes after the Sekai Taikai in Barcelona collapses into chaos: a brawl ends with the accidental death of Cobra Kai student Kwon, leaving the tournament and its participants in crisis. Netflix’s official recap supplies the immediate context for that cliffhanger; the new episodes must turn the shock into a conclusion for both the competition and the characters caught up in it.
The scale is deliberately enormous. Demetri calls the Sekai Taikai “the most prestigious karate tournament in modern martial arts history,” but that is a character’s description within the show, not a real-world ranking. The series has always treated karate as a world large enough to contain rival dojos, family histories, and life-defining grudges. Here, that maximalism gives the last episodes their momentum—and their occasional strain.

Does Johnny finally get a victory over his past?
Yes, and the tournament result works because it is also a personal reckoning. Johnny wins a tiebreaker against Sensei Wolf, securing the tournament for Cobra Kai. The final bout consciously echoes the 1984 All Valley tournament, where Johnny’s loss to Daniel became the wound around which much of his adult identity formed. This time, Johnny is cast as the underdog facing a defining match again.
In TheWrap’s interview with the creators, co-creator Hayden Schlossberg says, “I think that fight is really within the shadow of the 1984 fight.” Co-creator Josh Heald describes its heightened physical style as “Rocky IV,” adding that it is “bloodier, it’s sweatier, it’s more brutal in certain ways.” The comparison captures the sequence’s purpose: it is not a restrained sports drama, but a bruising, emphatic callback built to make the stakes legible.

The win is gratifying, but the deeper payoff is that Johnny no longer has to treat the old loss as the measure of his worth. The match answers the tournament question on screen; his changed relationship to that history answers the emotional one. That distinction keeps the finale from making a trophy feel like a complete redemption by itself.
Why Johnny and Daniel are the ending’s center
The series began with Johnny and Daniel as men locked into opposing versions of the past. Its best final movement recognizes that neither has to erase his own history to work with the other. Their partnership is not a sudden conversion into perfect friends; it is the practical and emotional result of years of conflict finally producing some understanding.

TheWrap’s review frames the story as Johnny’s, emphasizing redemption, self-discovery, and self-acceptance. The ending supports that reading by linking the tournament payoff to the relationship that launched the series. Johnny’s reconciliation with Kreese also gives their long, damaging bond a chance at something other than another round of domination and resentment. These resolutions do not make the past harmless; they let the characters move beyond being governed by it.
Daniel’s more complicated Miyagi legacy
Daniel’s conclusion is not simply a return to the uncomplicated certainty of his memories. The final episodes ask him to accept that the Mr. Miyagi he loved and revered had dimensions he did not know. That adjustment makes Daniel’s legacy story less about defending an idealized mentor and more about holding affection and complexity together.

It is a quieter kind of victory than Johnny’s match, and a useful counterweight to the tournament’s blunt physical stakes. Daniel can remain grateful for what Miyagi gave him without pretending that memory reveals every part of another person. In a show built on inherited rivalries and simplified stories about who was the hero, that willingness to revise his understanding feels earned.

The finale also has to close out a crowded ensemble in only five episodes. TheWrap judges the endings for Miguel, Sam, Robby, Tory, Kreese, and Silver satisfying. Their presence broadens the goodbye beyond Johnny’s personal arc, though the compression means the emotional emphasis remains strongest when the story returns to its central relationships rather than trying to give every thread equal weight.

Kreese’s resolution matters especially because it intersects with Johnny’s. The series has spent years showing how their teacher-student history shaped Johnny’s anger and ideas about strength. Making peace does not cancel Kreese’s harm or rewrite their history; it gives Johnny a chance to stop living entirely inside that inherited conflict.
Where the finale strains credibility
The show’s scale is also its most persistent limitation. A tournament that becomes a global crisis, layered with family conflicts, dojo politics, betrayals, and legacy confrontations, can make the martial-arts world feel overbuilt. The Guardian’s review questions both the plausibility of the escalating tournament premise and how convincing the cast is as martial artists. TheWrap likewise notes how much interpersonal drama the series piles onto its karate story.
That is a tonal tradeoff rather than a surprise flaw introduced at the finish. Cobra Kai runs on heightened, sometimes implausible soap-opera stakes; viewers willing to meet it at that level get energetic spectacle and emotionally direct callbacks. But when the tournament machinery and plot contrivances take over, the ending feels less grounded. Its most persuasive moments narrow the focus to what the characters mean to one another.
Does Cobra Kai stick the landing?
It does, with a qualification. The final match offers a clear, exciting tournament payoff, and its connection to Johnny’s original defeat gives the physical win emotional weight. The stronger achievement is the change around that win: Johnny can face his past without being trapped by it, Daniel can hold a more complicated truth about Miyagi, and the rivalry at the heart of the series has become a partnership.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe finale does not make every extravagant turn feel plausible, nor does five episodes give every character the same room. But it understands what the tournament is supposed to resolve. Its most durable victories are not the ones recorded on a bracket; they are the relationships that no longer have to repeat the past.
