Paramount has reportedly moved on from the proposed fourth Kelvin Timeline Star Trek film that would have reunited Chris Pine and the Abrams-era cast. That is a major setback for the long-delayed sequel—but it is not the same as a formal cancellation announcement. A separate, newly reported Star Trek movie is in development, and it is not described as a continuation of Pine’s films.
What is the latest update on Star Trek 4?
In November 2025, coverage citing Variety reported that Paramount had “moved on” from bringing back Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the Abrams-reboot ensemble for the planned fourth film. The report describes a change in the studio’s direction, not a public statement formally cancelling the project. TheWrap’s November 2025 report also described a separate film in development, while Variety’s January 2026 account clarified that Pine would not be part of it.
The distinction matters: the available reporting supports saying the Kelvin-cast reunion appears to have lost its momentum at Paramount. It does not establish that the studio has issued a formal cancellation notice, nor does it say the new film is a replacement sequel.
What did Chris Pine say about the franchise?
At the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, Variety asked Pine about Paramount’s new leadership and the future of Star Trek. He replied, “You probably know more than I do.” Asked what advice he had for the new leadership, Pine said, “Advice? Have fun, good luck, live long and prosper.” These were Pine’s remarks in an interview, not an official Paramount announcement about the film’s status. Variety reported the exchange.

Is the new Star Trek movie a sequel to Star Trek Beyond?
No. The new movie reported in late 2025 is described as a wholly original project, disconnected from earlier films and television series. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are attached to write and produce, and TheWrap reported that they were also attached to direct. Variety later said the movie would not continue the J.J. Abrams reboot and would not feature Pine.
That makes it distinct from the proposed Kelvin Timeline fourth film, the follow-up associated with Pine’s Captain Kirk and the cast of the Abrams-era movies. The reports do not establish that Paramount has officially designated the original project as a replacement for that sequel.

Why the Kelvin sequel had seemed possible
Star Trek Beyond opened in 2016, and plans for another film changed repeatedly afterward. A 2022 plan called for Pine, Zoe Saldaña, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Karl Urban to return. Director Matt Shakman later left the project. Those details explain why a fourth film remained part of the conversation, but past casting plans are not proof that the movie is currently active. The November 2025 account recounts that development history.
Pine had also said in earlier interviews that he was not being kept informed. In March 2023, he told Esquire, “I don’t know anything,” and described actors as often being “the last people to find out anything” in Star Trek development. In November 2023, he told ComicBook.com he knew of no plans (“Not that I know [of]”) and had not seen a script (“Of course not”). Those comments are historical context; they do not independently establish Paramount’s present decision. What is still unknown?
The available reports do not give the original movie a release date, production start, cast list or plot. They also do not establish a current script status. For the proposed Kelvin sequel, the reporting describes Paramount’s move away from the Pine-led ensemble but does not provide a formal cancellation statement. Any of those details could change if Paramount makes a new announcement.
