You can run a looping YouTube Live stream from an Indian VPS by installing OBS Studio on the server, adding your video as a looping Media Source, and sending OBS’s output to YouTube over RTMPS. The low VPS price is only part of the decision: check sustained encoding capacity and monthly outbound transfer, then test the complete stream before relying on it.

How the setup works

OBS runs on the VPS, reads a video file in a loop, encodes the output, and sends it to YouTube Live. You control the server remotely; your home computer and connection do not carry the broadcast. A VPS is not automatically a reliable encoder just because its listing shows a certain number of vCPUs. Performance depends on the server’s sustained CPU capacity, output settings, network route, and provider limits.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; connect to the endpoint and path YouTube supplies, using port 443. OBS’s YouTube service configuration lists endpoint values, but use the server URL shown for your own broadcast in Live Control Room. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance explains the encrypted connection.

What to check before renting a VPS

Transfer allowance is often the deciding cost

A continuous stream uses a large amount of outbound data. At 6 Mbps for 30 days, the video payload alone is about 1.94 decimal TB: 6,000,000 bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8. This is a calculation from the bitrate, not a YouTube-published usage figure, and it excludes audio and protocol overhead. A 100 GB monthly transfer allowance cannot cover a month at that rate unless the provider applies a different policy.

Before ordering, ask the provider to confirm the total price including GST and setup fees; monthly transfer and whether it counts outbound traffic; overage charges and fair-use rules; sustained throughput and any port-speed limit; server location and route to YouTube ingest; outbound RTMPS access; operating-system and remote desktop support; backup and recovery options; and cancellation terms. A listed uplink speed is not proof of sustained performance.

H.264 output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate Use
720p30 3 Mbps 6 Mbps A modest profile to test on constrained compute and network capacity.
1080p30 5 Mbps 10 Mbps Higher transfer and encoding demand; use only after verifying sustained capacity.

YouTube accepts H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. For ordinary stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance. Starting at 720p30 gives a lower-demand test than 1080p30; it does not remove the need to measure the VPS under the actual workload.

Set up the YouTube broadcast and OBS

  1. Create the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast, and locate its stream settings. Copy the server URL and stream key for that broadcast. Keep the key private: do not expose it in screenshots, public configuration files, logs, or a repository. Follow any eligibility or account prompts displayed in Live Control Room. An older OBS community guide says its integrated flow requires a verified channel and a 24-hour wait after verification; because that detail is not confirmed here in current official YouTube Help, rely on the prompts for your account. The guide is at OBS’s YouTube setup guide.
  2. Provision the VPS: Choose an OS and remote-access method supported by the OBS build you intend to install. Before paying, confirm that the provider permits sustained outbound streaming, allows outbound RTMPS to YouTube on port 443, and states how transfer is measured and billed. You do not generally need to open inbound ports for viewers; viewers watch on YouTube.
  3. Install and open OBS: Install a supported OBS Studio build for the server OS and configure the display or session arrangement needed to run its interface remotely. Exact installation steps and labels differ by OS and OBS version, so use the current OBS instructions for your chosen environment rather than assuming every VPS image includes a usable desktop session.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube: In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select the YouTube service or an appropriate YouTube RTMPS preset, and enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room if prompted. If you choose a custom server field, use the exact endpoint YouTube supplied; do not substitute a generic RTMP address.
  5. Add the video loop: In the OBS scene, add a Media Source, select the video file on the VPS, and enable Loop. Check that the source is visible and its audio is routed to the stream. If you use more than one source or scene, verify which one is active before starting.
  6. Set the encoder conservatively: In Settings → Output, configure the streaming encoder for H.264 and CBR; start with a 2-second keyframe interval and a bitrate suited to your chosen resolution and frame rate. The YouTube references above are for 720p30 and 1080p30. In Settings → Video, ensure the base and output resolutions and frame rate match your intended stream. A pre-encoded compatible file or a lower output profile may reduce encoding demand, but verify that the source and output formats work in OBS.
  7. Test privately or unlisted: Start the broadcast in a suitable test state before promoting or relying on it. Confirm that YouTube receives the video, the audio is correct, the stream health is acceptable, OBS is not accumulating dropped frames, the media loops at its end, and the connection stays stable. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and advises, “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
  8. Test unattended recovery: Restart the VPS and check whether your chosen launch method brings OBS back as intended. Confirm behavior after an OBS restart and after a temporary network interruption. Do not assume OBS or YouTube will recover every server failure or interruption; the result depends on your configuration and YouTube’s active broadcast state.

Network ports and bandwidth: what the numbers mean

For YouTube RTMPS, use the correct encrypted endpoint and outbound port 443. Ask the VPS provider or network administrator whether outbound connections to that endpoint are allowed. Do not open port 1935 merely because it appears in other streaming guidance: the National Informatics Centre’s webcast page mentions outbound RTMP port 1935 in its own context, which is not a universal requirement for YouTube RTMPS.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The National Informatics Centre page also gives 2–4 Mbps dedicated bandwidth per stream in its stated webcast context. That is separate from YouTube’s encoder bitrate recommendations and should not be treated as a YouTube setting or as a substitute for checking your provider’s transfer allowance. Its guidance is at NIC webcast services.

Secure and maintain the VPS

  • Restrict remote administration to the people and addresses that need it, and use strong authentication.
  • Keep the operating system and OBS updated; avoid exposing the stream key in remote desktop recordings or diagnostic output.
  • Decide how OBS will launch after a reboot and how you will notice a failed process. Any automatic restart or monitoring setup is your responsibility unless your provider explicitly includes it.
  • Review storage as well as transfer: the loop file must remain available on the VPS, and the disk must have room for it and any required updates or logs.
  • Check YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies for every video and audio track you use. Permission to possess a recording is not necessarily permission to rebroadcast it. Repeated or reused material can also affect channel eligibility and monetization under YouTube’s applicable policies; a technical loop does not grant content rights.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
OBS cannot connect to YouTube Wrong server URL or stream key, an inactive/mismatched broadcast, or blocked outbound RTMPS. Copy the current values from the selected Live Control Room broadcast, confirm its state, and ask the provider whether outbound port 443 to the RTMPS endpoint is permitted.
YouTube receives video but reports poor stream health Unstable throughput, an unsuitable bitrate, encoder overload, or dropped frames. Check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health; reduce output demand or bitrate for a new test, and verify sustained throughput rather than relying on advertised uplink speed.
CPU load stays high or frames are dropped The VPS cannot sustain the selected software encoding workload. Try a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, or a compatible pre-encoded source workflow; retest for long enough to expose sustained load. More listed vCPUs alone do not prove adequate performance.
The broadcast stops when the video ends The Media Source is not configured to loop, or the wrong source or scene is active. Enable Loop in the Media Source properties, verify the active scene, and test through the end of the file.
Stream starts but audio is missing or distorted The file has no usable audio, the source is muted, or OBS audio routing/levels are wrong. Check the file locally or in OBS, inspect the audio mixer and mute state, and make a short test broadcast before the full run.
Service works until the monthly allowance is exhausted Outbound transfer was underestimated or provider accounting differs from expectations. Compare actual usage with the provider’s billing panel and clarify traffic direction, overhead, overages, and fair-use terms before continuing.
OBS does not return after a reboot or disconnect No configured startup/restart mechanism, a failed desktop session, or a changed YouTube broadcast state. Log in remotely, check OBS and the session, restart deliberately, and confirm the broadcast state in Live Control Room. Set and test a suitable restart and monitoring approach if unattended operation is required.

Or let it run in the cloud

If maintaining a VPS, remote desktop, OBS session, and recovery setup is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. There is no home computer to leave running; it streams uploaded files rather than going live from a camera. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
