If your goal is to keep finished videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube Live stream, AWS Elemental MediaLive is usually more machinery than the job requires. MediaLive is a real-time video-processing service; a prerecorded loop also needs a playout system to supply files or a playlist. For a prepared program that should keep running while your computer is off, a cloud playout service is often the simpler fit. Choose MediaLive when you need its broader AWS processing and scheduling capabilities; choose OBS when you want local production control and can keep the computer and connection running.
What a 24/7 pre-recorded YouTube stream needs
YouTube’s encoder workflow requires software or hardware to encode and send the stream. As YouTube explains, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” The encoder is only one part of a continuous prerecorded setup: something must also play the file or playlist, keep it going, and recover if the stream stops.
A local setup such as OBS can perform both roles when configured with a media source or playlist, but the computer, encoder process, power, and internet connection remain in the operating path. A cloud playout service runs the uploaded program on provider infrastructure instead. MediaLive can support more involved live-processing workflows, but its configuration and usage-based billing may be disproportionate if all you need is a finished video loop.
Which alternative fits your workflow?
| Option | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | A finished video or playlist should run on YouTube while your computer is off. It keeps the stream running from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. | YouTube-only; it plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. |
| OBS on a computer or VPS | You want a no-charge, flexible software encoder, scenes, or direct control over your source. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge (YouTube encoder list). | The machine, power, network connection, and encoder must keep working. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming a stream will run unattended (YouTube encoder settings). |
| Other cloud playout services | You need a cloud-hosted playlist workflow. YouTube’s encoder list includes Gyre and Upstream; Looping Stream describes uploading files, ordering a playlist, and sending it continuously from cloud workers (YouTube encoder list; Looping Stream). | Compare supported destinations, file and playlist limits, quality, storage, pricing, recovery, monitoring, and trial terms. Provider reliability statements are claims by the providers, not independent test results. |
| AWS Elemental MediaLive | You need real-time video processing, multiple inputs, scheduled switching, or integration with a wider AWS media pipeline (AWS Elemental MediaLive documentation). | Configuration and costs depend on running inputs, outputs, add-ons, region, and run time. AWS says a running channel can continue accruing costs even if no input arrives or output is produced (AWS MediaLive pricing). |
| AJA HELO Plus | You specifically want a standalone hardware encoder with scheduled prerecorded playback without a computer. YouTube’s guide describes its PlayToStream feature for this use (YouTube encoder list). | Specialist hardware may be more than a minimal looping setup needs. Verify current hardware, firmware, and workflow compatibility before buying. |
How to choose
- Only prerecorded media, computer off: start with a cloud playout service.
- Scenes, live sources, or hands-on control: use OBS or another encoder, provided you can maintain the machine and uplink.
- Multiple inputs, scheduled switching, or AWS integration: evaluate MediaLive and estimate the full configuration before committing.
- Standalone appliance preferred: check whether a compatible hardware encoder meets the playback and scheduling need.
- Need a saved VOD: plan around YouTube’s archive behavior. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not promise automatic archiving for longer streams (YouTube live stream archives).
For any option, compare playlist and scheduling controls, stream-setting support, recovery and monitoring, total cost at your intended runtime, and whether the live event needs to be archived.

When MediaLive is worth considering
MediaLive is not simply a desktop file-looping app. AWS describes it as a service for encoding live sources in real time, with schedules that can add or switch inputs. AWS also documents a CDK example that generates a channel to loop an MP4. That example shows looping is possible in an AWS architecture; it does not mean MediaLive is a one-click playlist service.
It makes more sense when the stream is part of a broader broadcast workflow—for example, when you have several inputs to process or switch on a schedule, or need to connect the stream to other AWS media components. For a single finished video looping on YouTube, compare that flexibility against the time and cost of configuring and operating the complete workflow.

How to send a stream to YouTube with an encoder
The following is the general YouTube encoder setup. Exact controls for selecting a file, looping it, or arranging a playlist depend on the encoder or playout service you choose.
- Enable live streaming. In your YouTube account, enable live streaming. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder guide (YouTube encoder setup).
- Create or select the stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or choose the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter these in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or expose it in logs.
- Set up the program source. Select the prerecorded file or playlist and configure repeat or continuous playback if the software supports it. Confirm that the playlist order and transitions match your intended program.
- Configure encoding. Use the recommendations below as a starting point, while matching the output to your source and available upload capacity.
- Test, start, and monitor. Start sending the stream, check YouTube’s stream health, and confirm that both video and audio are arriving as expected before relying on it unattended.
YouTube encoder settings to check
YouTube currently recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its guide lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, and AAC or MP3 audio. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that any particular connection or encoder will sustain the stream (YouTube recommended encoder settings).

| Output | Codec | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 17 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube-published recommendations in its current encoder-settings guide. Choose a bitrate and quality that fit your source and sustained upload capacity, and test before going live. If the connection cannot reliably carry the configured stream, reduce the output quality or bitrate rather than assuming a brief successful start proves it will remain stable.
MediaLive costs and other cost considerations
MediaLive does not have a single flat price for a continuously running channel. AWS says on-demand charges apply hourly to running inputs, outputs, and add-on features, with a 10-minute minimum. Charges can continue while a channel is running even if it receives no content or produces no output. The total depends on the actual configuration, AWS Region, and runtime, so use the AWS MediaLive pricing page to estimate the setup you intend to run rather than extrapolating from an example.

For local OBS, the software is available at no charge according to YouTube, but that does not make a 24/7 local stream cost-free: the computer or server must remain powered and connected. A cloud service replaces that local operating burden with a provider plan. Compare recurring cost over your real schedule, storage needs, and required recovery behavior, not just the encoder’s purchase or download price.

Use media you can broadcast
Only stream recordings you own or are authorized to broadcast. Repeating a video does not by itself make the channel eligible for monetization or ensure compliance with YouTube policy. YouTube’s rules can also apply to repetitive content, so review current platform policies and make sure the channel’s programming provides legitimate value rather than relying on the fact that a stream is technically live. Looping Stream likewise tells customers to follow YouTube policies, including rules concerning repetitive and copyrighted media (Looping Stream).

Plan for interruptions and archives
No encoder or cloud provider can remove every failure point. A local stream depends on local power, software, and upload connectivity; a cloud stream still depends on the provider infrastructure and YouTube. Looping Stream notes that interruptions can arise from platform outages, invalid keys, or source-file problems and does not promise zero interruptions (Looping Stream). Test your recovery plan, keep the stream key secure, and monitor stream health. If you need a VOD, remember YouTube’s stated automatic archive limit: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; longer runs are not guaranteed to be (YouTube live stream archives).
Troubleshooting a continuous YouTube loop
- YouTube does not show an incoming stream: confirm live streaming is enabled, the correct server URL and current stream key are in the encoder, and the encoder is actually sending. If live streaming was only just enabled, YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Stream health warns or playback buffers: check sustained upload capacity, encoder bitrate, resolution, and frame rate. Test with a lower output setting if the connection cannot sustain the configured rate; follow YouTube’s recommended settings as a starting point, not a substitute for testing.
- The stream starts but the video stops or repeats incorrectly: inspect the file or playlist source and its repeat/order controls. A valid encoder connection cannot compensate for a missing, unreadable, or incorrectly configured source.
- YouTube rejects the key or the connection drops: verify that the key belongs to the selected live stream, update it in the encoder if it has been changed, and avoid exposing it publicly. For cloud services, check the provider’s recovery and alerting behavior rather than assuming retries are automatic.
- The stream runs but no archive appears: check the length of the stream. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not guarantee an archive for longer streams.
- A MediaLive estimate is higher than expected: inspect which inputs, outputs, add-ons, region, and channel runtime are included. AWS notes that a running channel can accrue charges without incoming content or produced output.
