A subscription may cost more while reducing setup and maintenance, or supplying scheduling, storage, recovery, and production tools. Compare the same stream profile, all recurring charges, and your own operating time; there is no universal cheapest option.
What the comparison includes
A fair monthly comparison is more than a server price beside a subscription price. Match the stream duration, destination count, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and need for recording or scheduling. Then account for hosting or subscription charges, bandwidth overages, compute, storage, taxes, backups or redundancy, and operator time.
The examples below are public reference prices accessed October 4, 2026. Geography, tax, billing term, plan details, and server address charges differ, so they are not equivalent quotes. Check the linked pricing pages before committing.
How much bandwidth does a 24/7 YouTube stream use per month?
A 30-day month has 2,592,000 seconds. At a constant bitrate, estimated decimal terabytes sent are bitrate in megabits per second × 2,592,000 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000. Using YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates, one uninterrupted output uses approximately:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- 720p30 at 8 Mbps: 2.59 TB.
- 1080p30 at 14 Mbps: 4.54 TB.
- 1080p60 at 17 Mbps: 5.51 TB.
These are calculations from YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations, not measured usage figures published by YouTube. They assume constant sending for 30 days and exclude protocol overhead, other traffic, and any audio not included in the selected bitrate. Reconnects and extra outputs can add traffic; providers may count TB and TiB differently. Verify the exact plan’s egress policy rather than assuming its advertised allowance is wholly usable for your stream.
What do the subscription and VPS examples cost?
These services solve different problems. Restream focuses on multistreaming and production features, Gyre explicitly offers 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming, and a VPS is infrastructure you operate yourself. Their headline prices should not be treated as like-for-like rates.

Prices and included features can change. Restream’s quoted amounts depend on the page’s billing selection; its page describes the annual-billing saving separately. Taxes and regional differences are not included in a universal comparison.
Is an FFmpeg VPS cheaper than a streaming service?
It can be cheaper in direct cash cost for one simple, pre-encoded stream if the VPS provides adequate compute and enough outbound traffic in the chosen region. But the cheapest server is not necessarily the cheapest working system: you also provide the loop, supervision, alerts, logging, updates, YouTube reconnection handling, and any backup or failover.

- VPS cash cost: instance, address, storage, backups, taxes, and any traffic overage.
- VPS operating cost: initial setup, updates, monitoring, recovery, and time spent diagnosing source or platform failures.
- Subscription cost: recurring tier and any required add-ons, subject to stream-count, quality, storage, billing-term, and fair-use limits.
- Subscription operating cost: setup and content/channel configuration still take time, but scheduling, storage, production tools, or recovery may be part of the service.
Hetzner’s CPX12 illustrates why a low listed instance price can be attractive, but its cited 20 TB allowance is below the estimated 4.54 TB per month at 1080p30 only if one mistakenly divides the allowance incorrectly: it is in fact above that estimate for a single output. At 1080p60, 5.51 TB is also below 20 TB. That comparison applies only to the specified European CPX12 listing and the stated assumptions; confirm current regional traffic terms, and account for other traffic and overhead. The listed €6.99 rate excludes IPv4 and VAT.
For a truly comparable decision, write down required uptime and the financial effect of an interruption. If continuity is business-critical, include the price and operating effort of a second server or other recovery path rather than comparing a managed service with one unbacked VPS.

What YouTube requires from either route
The ingest requirements apply whether FFmpeg runs on your VPS or a hosted encoder sends the feed. YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and keyframes every two seconds, with intervals not exceeding four seconds. Its current encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; its recommended AV1/H.265 values are 10 and 12 Mbps at those respective resolutions. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into formats for viewers on different devices and networks.
Enable live streaming on the channel before scheduling a first broadcast; YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Test using audio and movement similar to the actual program, and monitor stream health during transmission. YouTube’s guidance says 4K streams do not have the low-latency option and are optimized for quality at normal latency. A YouTube-specific Restream help page dated July 9, 2026 says its connection flow requires the connecting account to own the channel, not merely have manager or editor access. It also says YouTube has no stream-duration limit but archives only streams shorter than 12 hours; archive behavior is distinct from whether the live transmission continues. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and Restream’s YouTube connection help.

Which route fits your workflow?
- Consider a DIY VPS if the feed is already encoded, one YouTube output is enough, you are comfortable maintaining Linux services, and the regional egress allowance and compute are verified.
- Consider a hosted subscription if you value browser-based setup, scheduling, storage, support, recovery, production tools, or multistreaming enough to pay for the specific tier that provides them.
- Consider managed encoding such as Google Cloud Live Stream API only when its encoding and output capabilities fit your needs; its hourly input/output charges describe a different service class from a basic VPS relay.
Value your own time at your actual rate rather than inventing a generic labor cost. The break-even point depends on stream quality, duration, region, tax, reliability target, storage, and how much you value hands-on operation; the published figures do not establish one universal break-even month.
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded video going to YouTube, StreamNeo is the #1 option to consider here: it keeps the stream running from the cloud at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; there is no re-encode or quality tier, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. One slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, and the service supports playlists. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo or the plan details, or start your free day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube limit how long a live stream can run?
The cited Restream Help Center article says YouTube has no stream-duration limit, while archives are limited to streams shorter than 12 hours. Those are separate limits: archive behavior does not itself mean the live transmission stops.
Can a VPS relay be cheaper if I already have an encoded video?
Potentially. The key conditions are sufficient server capacity, a suitable regional outbound-traffic allowance, and willingness to operate and recover the process yourself.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
