There is no single confirmed fix for every case where an OBS source appears to stop before a gaming VOD ends. First identify whether the scene uses Media Source or VLC Video, then compare where the cutoff occurs: in the original file, OBS preview, stream output, or the processed YouTube VOD. The right setting depends on whether the problem is an early video cutoff, audio stopping first, a frozen last frame, or playback not restarting.
First identify what “ends early” means
A source reaching the end of its file is different from a source failing to restart, an audio track ending before the picture, or a viewer seeing a shorter result than OBS preview showed. Check the exact symptom before changing settings.
- Video ends before the expected point: compare the file’s actual duration and final seconds with the expected VOD.
- Audio stops but video continues: treat this as an audio-tail problem, not proof that the video file or source ended early.
- Last image freezes: playback may have completed while the final frame remains visible.
- Playback does not start again: check looping and source visibility behavior.
- OBS looks right but YouTube does not: compare the outgoing stream and processed VOD; the preview alone cannot establish what viewers received.
Check whether the source is Media Source or VLC Video
Select the affected source in the OBS scene and open its properties. Note its source type and whether it uses one local file or a playlist. These source types have different controls: OBS describes VLC Video as using VLC libraries for extended media support beyond the built-in Media Source. VLC Video also requires VLC to be installed; OBS documentation says, “If you are using 64-bit OBS, you must install 64-bit VLC.” OBS Project: Media Sources.
Media Source
Media Source is the built-in option for a local media file. Its playback controls are not interchangeable:

- Loop repeats the completed file. Enable it if the intended behavior is to replay that file continuously.
- Restart playback when source becomes active applies when the source becomes visible. It does not mean the file will loop while it remains visible.
- Show nothing when playback ends controls what appears after playback completes. It does not change the file’s duration or restore missing content.
Confirm that the selected file is the intended recording. If the file itself ends early, a scene setting cannot recover footage that is not present.
VLC Video
VLC Video can handle playlists and uses VLC libraries. Verify that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. If looping a playlist is intended, inspect the playlist entries and its Loop Playlist setting. To narrow the cause, compare the same local file in Media Source and VLC Video rather than assuming either source type is always more reliable.

Trace the cutoff from file to YouTube VOD
- Play the exact file outside OBS. Check its duration and watch the final seconds in a standalone player. Make sure it is the same file selected in OBS, not a similarly named export or an older version.
- Check OBS preview. Reproduce the issue and note the expected and observed end times. Record whether picture, sound, or both stop.
- Make a short local recording or controlled stream test. Compare the recording or viewer-side output with the preview. This helps establish whether the symptom appears before or after OBS preview.
- Inspect the YouTube output and finished VOD. Compare the same segment after the VOD is available. A difference between preview and output can occur: OBS Studio issue #11984 reports a VLC source cutting off in output while monitoring did not. That report is a reason to check both paths, not a diagnosis or universal fix. OBS Studio issue #11984.
Keep the comparisons tied to the same clip and timestamp. If the standalone file is complete but the cutoff appears only in the output or VOD, changing Loop or the post-playback display setting may not address the layer where the problem occurs.
What reported workarounds do—and do not—show
OBS forum posts describe individual cases, not fixes that are verified for every setup. In one report, local audio files skipped near the beginning and ended short in OBS; a later participant said that switching from VLC Video to Media Source worked for them. That experience may be worth testing if your source is VLC Video, but it does not prove the same cause applies to a gaming VOD. OBS forum report.

A separate forum discussion concerns audio muting during the last second or two of clips. A participant reported that saving to MKV and remuxing to MP4 solved their case. Because that report is about audio at the clip’s tail, it is not evidence that remuxing will fix a video that ends early. OBS forum discussion.

- OBS version and operating system
- Source type, and whether it points to a single file, playlist, or URL
- Media format and the file’s expected and actual end times
- VLC version and architecture, if using VLC Video
- Whether the cutoff affects video, audio, or both
- Where it happens: standalone player, OBS preview, outgoing stream, or finished YouTube VOD
- An OBS log from a reproduction
Without those details, there is not enough evidence to select a precise root cause. A useful support report includes the comparison results, not just the statement that the source ends early.
