Buying Beverly Hills showed more of Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky’s family conversation about their separation because Netflix cameras were with the family in Aspen after the split became public. Richards said the decision came after The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 13 had finished filming. The difference in coverage reflects timing and the two shows’ distinct settings—not established evidence of a network decision to keep the story off either program.
When did the separation happen relative to filming?
Richards said she and Umansky decided to separate after the main filming for The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 13 had wrapped. Bravo reported that the decision came in July 2023 and that cameras later returned to film a conversation with their daughters. Bravo’s account of Richards’s remarks places the separation after the season’s original shoot.
Richards described the next part of the sequence in a February 29, 2024 Amazon Live appearance, reported by Us Weekly: “ [Then] the story came out and then the Netflix cameras happened to be in Aspen.” Us Weekly’s report also quotes her saying that scenes for both shows were filmed after their initial filming had wrapped.
- RHOBH Season 13’s main filming ended.
- Richards and Umansky decided to separate. Richards said the decision came after the season’s filming.
- The separation became public while Netflix cameras were with the family in Aspen.
- Both productions later filmed additional scenes. Richards said each show recorded footage after its initial filming had wrapped.
What did Buying Beverly Hills capture?
The Netflix cameras recorded a family discussion in Aspen. Netflix’s March 20, 2024 preview described it as the first time Richards and Umansky addressed the fracture in their relationship on camera as a family. The family was reacting to the news becoming public before the couple could explain it to their daughters themselves. Netflix Tudum’s preview describes the scene and its family context.

That footage fit Buying Beverly Hills, a series centered on Umansky, his family-run real estate firm The Agency, and the family members involved in that world. Netflix said Richards had a larger role in Season 2, including addressing the separation and its effects on the daughters. Netflix’s Season 2 overview sets out the show’s focus and Richards’s role.
What did RHOBH show instead?
RHOBH followed Richards within its ensemble cast. Its coverage included her personal account of the separation and a reunion discussion, rather than the same Aspen family conversation that viewers saw on Netflix. Vanity Fair reported on how the accounts were divided between the programs and quoted host Andy Cohen describing them as different perspectives: “I would say a lot of what he’s revealing is his story to tell and what Kyle is revealing on [RHOBH] is her side of the story.” Vanity Fair’s report covers the shows’ different footage and Cohen’s characterization.

| Show | Production setting and focus | Separation coverage described in the cited reporting |
|---|---|---|
| Buying Beverly Hills | Umansky, The Agency, and family life connected to the business | The Aspen family discussion and later footage addressing the separation’s effects on the family |
| The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills | Richards within an ensemble cast, including the show’s reunion format | Richards’s personal account and reunion discussion |
The comparison is about which conversations each program captured and the perspective each format offered. It does not mean that the split was absent from RHOBH.
What Richards did—and did not—say about the reason for the split
Richards has said there were things that caused her to lose trust and that she could not recover from. Umansky separately said he did not know what she meant. Those are their attributed accounts, not an independently established explanation for the separation. Richards declined to detail the reason at the reunion, saying, “It’s nobody’s fucking business,” as reported by Vanity Fair. The cited reporting says the couple denied infidelity as the reason; it does not establish a definitive cause.

Does this prove one show had exclusive access?
No. Richards’s remarks support a straightforward explanation: RHOBH Season 13’s main filming had already ended when the couple decided to separate, Netflix cameras happened to be in Aspen as the news emerged, and both series later filmed additional scenes. The available reporting does not establish that a network deliberately withheld the story, that either show had exclusive rights, or that a contract dictated what each program could show.
