The story centers on how these two women come to be viewed as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. It is a character-focused backstory to the Oz mythology, not simply a retelling of the familiar story from the witches’ point of view.

Jon M. Chu directed the film. Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba and Ariana Grande plays Glinda. The principal cast also includes Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Peter Dinklage, Bronwyn James and Marissa Bode.

Universal classifies the movie as drama, family, musical and fantasy. Its listed runtime is 2 hours 40 minutes; the home-video technical specification gives a runtime of 2 hours, 39 minutes and 59 seconds. In the United States, it is rated PG for some scary action, thematic material and brief suggestive material.
Is it based on the book or the Broadway musical?
The film’s immediate source is the stage musical Wicked, not Maguire’s novel. The adaptation lineage is:

- L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) established the Oz world.
- Gregory Maguire reimagined that world in the novel Wicked (1995).
- The Broadway musical, with a book by Winnie Holzman and music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, opened in 2003.
- The 2024 film adapts the stage musical. Holzman and Dana Fox are credited with the screenplay.
Maguire’s novel is therefore part of the story’s history, but the movie is not a direct screen adaptation of that book.
What does the film look and sound like?
The movie builds a large-scale visual world for Oz. NBCUniversal’s production guide says the production planted nearly nine million tulips and describes approximately 150 costume artisans, including makers, tailors, weavers and embroiderers. Those are studio-reported production details.

The songs come from Stephen Schwartz’s stage musical, with a score by John Powell and Schwartz. NBCUniversal reports that the songs were performed live on set whenever possible; that description does not mean every vocal performance was recorded live.

Wicked opened in U.S. theaters on November 22, 2024. Universal lists 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD editions, with a February 4, 2025 street date in its home-video announcement. The studio’s film page also offers digital purchase or rental; a digital purchase is a limited license governed by the retailer’s terms, rather than unrestricted ownership of a file.

What is the stage musical’s connection to the film’s scale?
The stage musical and the movie are related works, but their published audience and earnings figures should not be confused. NBCUniversal reported in 2024 that the stage musical had generated more than $6 billion in global receipts and had been seen by 65 million people across more than 100 cities in 16 countries. Those figures describe the stage production, not the 2024 film.
