Born in New York to Greek parents, she trained in Athens, became internationally known for roles including Norma and Tosca, and left a recorded legacy that continues to introduce listeners to her artistry.
Who was Maria Callas?
Callas was born in New York on 2 December 1923 and died in Paris on 16 September 1977. The Maria Callas Foundation gives her full name as Maria Anna Cecilia Sofia Kalogeropoulos, but accounts vary over its expanded form; “Maria Callas” is the clearest and most consistently used name. The Foundation’s biography supplies the dates and biographical details.
How did Callas begin her opera career?
In 1937, Callas moved to Athens with her mother and began studying singing at the Greek National Conservatoire. In 1939 she entered the Athens Conservatoire in the class of soprano Elvira de Hidalgo, whose teaching helped shape her development. The Foundation places Callas’s professional debut with the Greek National Opera in the 1941–42 period and identifies Tosca as her first major role. The Foundation’s chronology traces these early milestones.
Her Italian debut came in 1947 in La Gioconda at Verona. She made her La Scala debut in 1950 as Aida; a later landmark there was the season-opening performance of I vespri siciliani on 7 December 1951. These were separate milestones, not the same debut. The chronology records the dates.

Why was Maria Callas influential?
Her significance was not simply a matter of having the “best” or “biggest” voice. The Maria Callas Foundation credits her with breathing new life into bel canto repertoire and transforming operatic interpretation through dramatic intensity. Her precise phrasing, musical intelligence and character work made a role feel like a fully inhabited person rather than a sequence of impressive vocal moments. That combination helped change what audiences and performers expected from an opera singer.
Callas’s recordings extended that approach beyond the theatre. The Foundation notes recordings of roles such as Norma, Violetta, Lucia, Medea and Tosca, as well as operas she did not perform on stage, including La bohème, Pagliacci, Manon Lescaut and Carmen. In her own words, as quoted in the Foundation’s biography: “Everything I have to say is in the music. It is all there in my records.”

What is a good Maria Callas recording to start with?
One famous starting point is the 1953 La Scala recording of Tosca, with Callas, Giuseppe di Stefano and Tito Gobbi, conducted by Victor de Sabata. The Foundation’s chronology describes it as a celebrated recording. It is a useful entry into Callas’s dramatic approach, not an objective claim that one recording is definitively the best.
When choosing among Callas recordings, consider the opera and role, whether the performance is live or studio-recorded, the conductor and supporting cast, the recording date, and the sound restoration or edition. Listeners interested in a particular phase of her voice may also want to compare performances from different periods. Warner Classics lists releases including La Divina: Maria Callas In All Her Roles, Pure and a best-of vinyl edition; catalogue contents and formats can change.
