MediaMTX YouTube Streaming on Ubuntu: Install and Configure

A practical Ubuntu guide to installing MediaMTX, publishing a local test stream, and configuring a separate publisher for YouTube RTMPS.

MediaMTX can receive a stream on your Ubuntu machine, but publishing to MediaMTX and sending that stream onward to YouTube are separate jobs. Install and run MediaMTX, publish a local test stream to a path such as /mystream, then configure a publisher or relay with the RTMPS URL and stream key from your YouTube Live Control Room. The official MediaMTX setup pages document the local publishing step; they do not provide a single integrated MediaMTX-to-YouTube forwarding recipe.

What MediaMTX does—and what it does not do

MediaMTX describes itself as “a ready-to-use and zero-dependency live media server and media proxy that allows to publish, read, proxy, record and playback real-time video and audio streams.” In this workflow, it is the server that receives a stream from a publishing client, such as OBS or FFmpeg. YouTube is a separate destination, and an encoder or relay must send the stream to YouTube.

That distinction matters if you are looking for a field in mediamtx.yml where you can paste YouTube’s public RTMP address. The official pages cited here explain how to publish to MediaMTX and how to configure YouTube ingest in an encoder, but do not document a universal MediaMTX YAML field that forwards a path to YouTube. Identify which program handles each hop rather than assuming that a local MediaMTX path is automatically relayed upstream.

Choose an Ubuntu installation method

The official installation guide documents a standalone executable and Docker. It recommends Docker for production environments, while also documenting the standalone option. Choose according to how you plan to operate the service:

  • 【USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C: 10Gbps & Versatile Connectivity】The USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C port on the KAMRUI P2 small pc supports 10Gbps data transfer speeds and can also output DisplayPort 1.4 video. Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.
Method Useful when Trade-off
Standalone binary You want a direct executable for a straightforward trial or installation. You must select the release bundle matching your operating system and machine architecture.
Docker You want a containerized, repeatable deployment and are comfortable operating Docker. You need Docker and must follow the project’s current container instructions.

The documentation is rolling and does not establish a fixed version for this article. Start at the current official install instructions and the project’s Releases page. For the binary, choose the Linux bundle for the machine’s architecture; do not assume every Ubuntu device is linux_amd64. Extract the release archive and run ./mediamtx as described by the current guide. For Docker, use the official Docker method rather than adapting a binary command.

Publish a local test stream to MediaMTX

First confirm the local publishing hop works. MediaMTX’s RTMP client documentation uses rtmp://localhost/mystream as an example publishing address; the resulting path is /mystream. Here, OBS or FFmpeg publishes to MediaMTX on the Ubuntu machine. This does not, by itself, publish anything to YouTube.

OBS

  1. Start MediaMTX on the Ubuntu machine.
  2. In OBS, open Settings > Stream.
  3. Set Service to Custom…, enter rtmp://localhost/mystream as the server URL, and leave the stream key empty for this documented local path.
  4. Start streaming in OBS. The client documentation identifies /mystream as the path where the stream is available.

These OBS directions follow the MediaMTX OBS guide. If OBS is on a different computer from MediaMTX, localhost would refer to the OBS computer, not the Ubuntu server; use a reachable address appropriate to your network and deployment instead.

FFmpeg

MediaMTX lists FFmpeg as an RTMP publishing client. Use the current RTMP client instructions to configure FFmpeg to publish to the MediaMTX endpoint and path. The exact input and encoding options depend on the source you are sending; do not treat the example endpoint as a YouTube destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Get YouTube’s RTMPS address and stream key

Use the destination details shown for your own stream in YouTube Live Control Room; do not copy a fixed ingest address or key from a tutorial. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions direct creators to open or schedule a stream, go to Stream settings, use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL, and copy the Stream URL and stream key into the encoder.

  1. Open or schedule the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
  2. Open Stream settings and reveal the RTMPS URL with the lock icon.
  3. Copy the Stream URL and stream key into the program that will publish to YouTube.
  4. Confirm the selected URL uses RTMPS if you intend to use secure ingest. YouTube notes that the displayed default may be an ordinary RTMP URL.

A stream key is a secret credential: do not publish it in a public configuration file, screenshot, chat, or command shared with others. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s controls before using it again.

Plan the second hop to YouTube

There are two distinct connections to account for:

  1. Publishing client to MediaMTX: OBS or FFmpeg sends a stream to the local MediaMTX path, such as /mystream.
  2. Publisher or relay to YouTube: a program capable of sending the stream onward uses the YouTube RTMPS URL and key retrieved from Live Control Room.

The official MediaMTX pages linked above document RTMP publishing into MediaMTX and its OBS workflow; YouTube documents RTMPS ingest configuration for an encoder. They do not establish one integrated forwarding configuration between the two. Choose and configure a separate upstream publisher or relay that supports the source path and YouTube’s destination credentials, and consult that program’s documentation for its forwarding procedure. Do not paste YouTube’s address into an arbitrary MediaMTX YAML setting or assume the local OBS connection will also reach YouTube.

Validate configuration changes

If you edit a MediaMTX YAML configuration, use the documented validation command before restarting or relying on the service:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

./mediamtx --validate-conf=/path/to/mediamtx.yml

Replace the example path with the actual configuration file path. The configuration guide also describes configuration through a file, environment variables, or the Control API. Check that guide for current names and behavior rather than adding an undocumented forwarding field.

RTMP or RTMPS: choose the right connection

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Use the RTMPS URL shown for the stream when the publishing encoder supports it and secure ingest is intended. RTMP and RTMPS are transport choices for a connection; they do not determine which program performs the second hop. MediaMTX’s OBS documentation discusses RTMPS support for server-side RTMP connections when TLS is configured, which is separate from YouTube’s remote ingest settings.

Troubleshoot the common setup mistakes

  • The local stream does not appear at MediaMTX: confirm MediaMTX is running, the publishing client targets the correct host and path, and the local publishing instructions match the current release. In particular, localhost points to the machine running the client.
  • YouTube receives nothing although the local path works: a stream published to MediaMTX is not automatically forwarded. Confirm that a separate publisher or relay is configured to send the source onward to the YouTube destination.
  • YouTube rejects the destination connection: retrieve the current URL and key from the specific stream’s Live Control Room settings, and check whether you selected RTMPS rather than the ordinary RTMP default.
  • MediaMTX fails to start after a YAML edit: run ./mediamtx --validate-conf=/path/to/mediamtx.yml with the actual file path, then consult the current configuration guide for supported options.
  • The binary will not run on the Ubuntu machine: recheck that the release bundle matches both Linux and the machine’s architecture; do not assume an x86-64 bundle fits ARM hardware.
  • A key appears in a log, screenshot, or shared file: treat it as exposed and replace it through YouTube’s stream controls before continuing.

Check YouTube’s content and live-stream rules

Technical delivery does not grant rights to the video or audio you broadcast. Before streaming, check that you have the necessary rights and that the material complies with YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies. A working RTMPS connection is not a finding that content is permitted, and this setup guide does not establish that reused footage is eligible for any particular channel or monetization outcome.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream without maintaining a self-hosted relay, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
