YouTube Live Stream Goes Offline After Renaming a Playlist File? Fix the Media Paths

A renamed video can break an OBS source or playlist entry that still points to its old path. Find the right repair for OBS/VLC or direct HLS ingestion, then check YouTube separately.

If renaming a video file made your YouTube loop stream go offline, first check whether OBS or a playlist still points to the file’s old location. Repoint the source to the renamed file, then confirm it plays in OBS preview. Only if local playback works should you troubleshoot YouTube ingest separately.

First identify what “playlist file” means

The fix depends on whether OBS is playing local media or your encoder is sending an HLS playlist to YouTube. These are different workflows, and HLS requirements do not automatically apply to an ordinary OBS source.

What you are using Where to check Likely repair
One local video in OBS The scene’s Media Source properties Select the file at its current path.
A list of local videos in OBS The scene’s VLC Video source and its playlist entries Update the entry for the renamed file. VLC must be installed for this source type. OBS documents Media Source and VLC Video separately.
HLS sent directly to YouTube The uploaded .m3u or .m3u8 playlist and its referenced segments Check playlist suffixes, uploaded filenames, and segment paths against YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements.

Repair a renamed file in OBS

  1. Open the scene that runs the loop. In OBS, select the scene and locate the source that plays the video. A single file is commonly a Media Source; a playlist may be handled by VLC Video.
  2. Open the source properties. For a Media Source, select the renamed file at its current location. For VLC Video, update the affected playlist entry so it uses the file’s current path. Save or apply the change.
  3. Check the preview. Confirm the expected video and audio play in the OBS preview. If they do not, the local source path or playlist entry is still wrong; YouTube is not yet the issue to solve.
  4. Check YouTube only after local playback works. If OBS preview plays correctly but the public stream is offline, inspect YouTube Live Control Room and the encoder’s connection to the streaming destination. OBS identifies encoder-to-service connection problems as a separate troubleshooting layer (OBS Help Portal).

A rename changes a file’s pathname. A saved source that still references the former pathname may no longer be able to open it. The practical remedy is to update the source or playlist entry to the file’s present location; a troubleshooting guide describes this sequence as well (iTechGuides, October 3, 2026).

If the stream uses HLS ingestion

For direct HLS ingestion, the playlist tells the receiving server which media segments to expect and in what order. Check that the media playlist ends in .m3u8 or .m3u, and that every segment filename and path in the playlist matches the segment being uploaded. YouTube specifically requires a path component included in a Media Segment filename to match the path referenced in the corresponding playlist entry (YouTube HLS ingestion guide).

Relative segment references can also be affected when an HLS playlist is moved or renamed. RFC 8216 says, “Any relative URI is considered to be relative to the URI of the Playlist that contains it.” That HLS rule is specified in RFC 8216, published by the IETF in August 2017. If the playlist URI changes, verify that its relative references still resolve to the intended segment locations.

Troubleshoot by failure layer

  • OBS preview is blank or reports missing media: Reopen the source properties and select the renamed file at its current path, or correct the affected VLC playlist entry.
  • The wrong video plays: Check that you edited the source in the scene used for the live output and that the playlist entry points to the intended file.
  • Preview works but YouTube reports offline: Check YouTube Live Control Room and the encoder-to-platform connection rather than continuing to change the local media path.
  • HLS segments are not found: Compare each uploaded segment filename and path with the corresponding playlist reference, and verify the playlist’s required suffix.
