For a documented graphical setup on Windows, OBS Studio is the better-supported starting point. Its official guide covers stream keys, output settings, testing, automatic reconnect, and Windows network troubleshooting. The available official documentation here does not support a fair verdict that OBS is more reliable or easier than FFmpeg, nor does it substantiate a current FFmpeg command-line setup. For either encoder, plan around the limits of a single PC and YouTube’s archive rules: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
What this comparison can—and cannot—establish
OBS has a documented Windows workflow: choose a streaming service, enter a stream key, configure output, test the stream, and enable automatic reconnect. Those documented controls make it a practical choice if you want a graphical interface and settings you can inspect.
That is not proof that OBS is categorically more reliable, simpler, or lighter on resources than FFmpeg. The official FFmpeg documentation needed to verify current Windows commands, reconnect behavior, and comparable resource use is not established here. Rather than guess at commands or rank performance without a benchmark, treat FFmpeg as an option you should validate against current documentation for the specific Windows build and workflow you intend to use.
Both choices have the same underlying constraints: the encoder must reach YouTube with compatible settings, and the PC, power, and internet connection must remain available. An automatic reconnect setting can help with some disconnections; it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.

Requirements before you set up OBS
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as basic system requirements. These establish basic compatibility, not whether a machine can encode a chosen stream. OBS says CPU load depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; use its Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the actual workload. OBS system requirements
A documentary or other pre-recorded program may be less demanding than a complex live scene, but the encoder still has to process the chosen output continuously. Higher frame rates can raise the load; OBS specifically notes that 60 fps may tax a system more than 30 fps. Confirm that your machine can sustain the intended settings over a realistic test rather than assuming that a successful short launch proves it can run indefinitely. OBS streaming guide
Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection to YouTube. For a broadly compatible setup, H.264 with CBR is a straightforward choice; whichever codec you select, check the current YouTube settings before going live. H.264 bitrate examples
YouTube’s recommended values vary with resolution, frame rate, and codec. These H.264 examples are recommendations, not guarantees that your internet connection can sustain the upload:

| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
Use a bitrate your stable upstream connection can maintain, not simply the highest value in the table. YouTube advises testing upload capacity; OBS troubleshooting offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when choosing a bitrate. That percentage is OBS’s troubleshooting guidance, not a YouTube rule. Leave headroom for normal network variation and other household or office traffic. OBS dropped-frames troubleshooting
Keyframes, audio, and picture format
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists 128 kbps for stereo audio and a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo.
- Picture: Use square pixels and progressive scan; Rec. 709 is the listed color space for SDR.
These are encoder requirements and recommendations, not a universal preset. Match the settings to your content, system capacity, and sustained upload, and recheck YouTube’s live encoder page because platform guidance can change. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Set up a 24/7 stream in OBS on Windows
- Prepare the program and scenes. Open OBS and configure the media source or other sources you need. Keep the scene and source layout as simple as practical for an unattended stream. OBS’s streaming guide recommends testing scenes and settings before the first live broadcast. OBS streaming guide
- Connect the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key. In OBS, select an included streaming service or configure a custom server, then enter the URL and key in the stream settings. YouTube describes the key as working like the stream’s password and address: keep it private and do not share it. YouTube encoder setup YouTube encoder settings
- Set output and encoder. In OBS output settings, choose an available encoder—OBS identifies options such as QuickSync, NVENC, and AMD VCE—and set the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval to values YouTube supports and your PC and connection can sustain. Hardware encoder availability depends on the computer. OBS streaming guide
- Enable reconnect behavior. OBS documents automatic reconnect under its Advanced settings. Enable it and review the available retry settings in your installed version. Reconnect can address some interruptions; it does not keep the PC powered, prevent an encoder crash, or resolve every network or YouTube-side problem. OBS streaming guide
- Run a realistic test before leaving it unattended. Start a test stream with similar audio, motion, scenes, and output settings. Check the YouTube preview and stream health, listen for audio issues, watch for dropped frames, and verify that local recording works if you need a backup. Test the duration and workload that your actual program requires; a brief test cannot establish 24/7 reliability.
- Start the live broadcast in YouTube. For a scheduled stream, wait for its preview in Live Control Room and use YouTube’s go-live workflow when ready. Confirm that the correct program and audio are reaching viewers before leaving the PC unattended. YouTube encoder setup
Keep the Windows stream as stable as possible
Network and dropped frames
OBS says dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate. Reduce bitrate to a level your connection can hold; if Wi-Fi is unstable, OBS recommends a wired connection. A cable is a reliability measure, not a guarantee of uptime. OBS dropped-frames troubleshooting
If the problem continues, OBS’s Windows-specific troubleshooting includes network optimization and TCP pacing options, and recommends checking security software, VPNs, network utilities, drivers, and network hardware such as cables, network cards, modems, and routers. Dynamic bitrate can reduce quality to respond to network conditions, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem. Change one likely cause at a time and test again. Backups and failover
If you configure a backup encoder, test the actual handoff before relying on it. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable during a controlled test, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Monitor audio and video quality continuously during operation. YouTube live streaming tips
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not rely on YouTube to archive a 24/7 broadcast
YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It warns that “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve the full program. If retaining the output matters, record locally and verify that the recording file is growing and remains usable. Check available disk space as part of your own setup; the cited YouTube guidance does not specify a drive capacity. YouTube archive live streams YouTube live streaming tips
Copyright and reused-content checks still matter
Technical success does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast the material or that the channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies. Before scheduling a long-running stream, confirm the rights for every video, music track, image, and other included material. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules are separate from encoder settings; a stream key or successful preview is not permission to use someone else’s work. Review the applicable YouTube channel monetization policies and copyright guidance.

Choose OBS if you want a documented GUI workflow and can test the PC, connection, and recording plan under realistic conditions. Choose FFmpeg only if you can validate its specific Windows setup and recovery behavior from current documentation yourself; the evidence here cannot responsibly provide commands or claim an advantage. Either way, the archive and uptime risks belong to the whole system, not just the encoder.
