Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your Raspberry Pi YouTube stream keeps restarting, the restart loop is a symptom—not the diagnosis. Check the service status and journal first, then inspect the command, user, paths and environment systemd is actually using. Finally, verify YouTube is receiving a usable broadcast: an active service does not prove the video and audio are reaching your live stream.
1. Capture the failure before changing the service
Use the actual unit name in place of youtube-stream.service if yours differs. These commands show the service state and the latest messages from the current boot:
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -b -n 100 --no-pager
Find the first error around each restart, not just the last “Started” message. Look for an exit code, signal, timeout, permission denial, missing file, or encoder/network error. Raspberry Pi’s Connect troubleshooting uses the same status-and-journal approach for its systemd services; those examples are diagnostic guidance, not specific to YouTube streaming: Raspberry Pi Connect documentation.
If you share logs for help, redact any stream key or other credential. Do not paste a key into a public forum or include it in a command or log excerpt.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Inspect the unit systemd is using
Read the effective unit definition, including any overrides, rather than relying on what you remember entering:
systemctl cat youtube-stream.service
Check these settings and references:
ExecStart: Is the executable and script path correct? Are the arguments valid for the installed encoder?User: Does this account have permission to read the media, access the capture device, and use any required directories?WorkingDirectory: Does the service start in the directory the command expects?EnvironmentFileandEnvironment: Are required values available to the service? A shell variable set in an interactive SSH session is not automatically available to systemd.- Referenced media and device paths: Are they present and accessible under the service user?
A command that works in your SSH shell can fail as a service because systemd may use a different user, working directory, environment, or permissions. Where practical, reproduce the command as the configured service user with the same paths and environment. Keep secrets protected while doing so.

3. Match the log message to the likely cause
Treat each item below as a diagnostic direction, not a conclusion about your Pi; the journal’s first failure is the useful evidence.
| What the log points to | What to check |
|---|---|
| Executable or script not found | Confirm the full path in ExecStart and that the file exists. Services should not depend on a command being found only through your interactive shell’s PATH. |
| Permission denied | Check ownership and read/execute permissions for the program, media, directories, and any capture device, using the service’s configured user. |
| Invalid option or argument | Review the encoder command and options against the installed program. Correct the logged argument error before changing restart behavior. |
| Missing input, media, or capture source | Verify the configured file or device exists at the path systemd uses and is accessible to the service account. |
| Missing environment value | Check the unit’s environment settings and referenced file. Do not expose a stream key while diagnosing the problem. |
| Network or ingest error | Check the connection and stream configuration, then confirm YouTube’s live status. The message may indicate a local network issue or a remote ingest/configuration problem; it does not by itself identify which one. |
| Timeout or termination signal | Use the surrounding journal entries and unit settings to determine whether the process stalled, was stopped, or exceeded a configured limit. |
4. Understand what the restart policy does
The Restart= setting controls what systemd does after a process exits; it does not repair the command, input, credentials, permissions, or connection that caused a failure. The systemd service manual says that Restart=no is the default, so the service is not restarted automatically. Restart=on-failure restarts after defined failure conditions, while Restart=always also restarts after a clean exit. See the systemd.service manual.

For a long-running encoder, failure-only restarts can be easier to reason about than restarting after every clean exit. But choose according to what a clean exit means for your command: if ending normally should trigger another run, a different policy may be appropriate. A setting such as RestartSec= spaces out restart attempts; it does not fix a persistent fault.
If systemd reports that the unit hit a start limit, treat that as another result to investigate—not evidence that the underlying stream problem is solved. Systemd applies start-rate limiting to repeated attempts; check the unit’s configuration and the failures that led to the limit before deciding what to change. The details are in the systemd.unit manual.

5. Reload, restart, and inspect fresh logs
After editing a unit file, make systemd reread its configuration before restarting the service:
- Edit the unit or its override to correct the cause identified in the logs.
- Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Restart the actual unit:
sudo systemctl restart youtube-stream.service. - Check the new state:
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service --no-pager. - Read messages from this boot again:
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -b -n 100 --no-pager.
Confirm the earlier error is gone and the process remains in the state you expect. If the service is rate-limited, do not treat clearing a failed state as a fix: first understand the original error and the configured start limits.

6. Verify the broadcast separately from the service
Systemd reports on the process, not whether YouTube has a valid live video-and-audio feed. Review the encoder’s own output for input, encoding, and ingest errors, and check the stream’s status in YouTube Live Control Room. A process can remain active while the media source is missing or YouTube is not receiving a usable stream. A bad key, missing file, or invalid command are examples of problems that can produce repeated starts without a healthy broadcast; the exact cause must come from your configuration and logs.
For a Raspberry Pi file-loop setup, StreamNeo’s Raspberry Pi 24/7 YouTube loop guide is an illustrative example of FFmpeg under systemd, not official YouTube guidance or proof of the cause on your device.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded documentary footage looping on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays the upload—not a camera feed—and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
