You can make a YouTube live stream members-only in YouTube Studio, but keeping it always on requires a continuous video feed reaching YouTube. Set the stream’s visibility to Members only, choose which paid members can watch, and use an encoder—or a cloud service for prerecorded video—to send the feed. YouTube does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 playback, so plan to monitor and recover the stream.
Before you set up the stream
Check both live-streaming access and channel memberships before building your workflow. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by a streamer aged at least 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance covers the general requirements.
Memberships have their own eligibility and policy requirements. In YouTube Studio, open Earn → Memberships to create and publish membership levels and perks. YouTube allows up to six levels; higher-priced levels inherit perks from lower-priced levels. A members-only live stream is one available perk. See YouTube’s membership levels and perks guidance.
Choose how members-only access will work
Start members-only from the beginning
Use this option when you do not want a public portion. On a computer, open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live. Configure the broadcast, set visibility to Members only, then choose All paid members or a specific membership level and above. Schedule the stream or start it immediately. Members are notified as with regular subscriber broadcasts; nonmembers can see broadcast metadata but cannot watch the members-only stream. Start publicly, then switch to members-only
Choose this when you want a public introduction before the member segment. In Live Control Room, you can schedule a change from public to members-only with a countdown of 1, 5, 10, 15, 30, or 60 minutes. When it ends, members move into the members-only stream and nonmembers are prompted to join. YouTube creates two streams using the same stream key, and reports the public and members-only portions separately in Analytics. This transition is unavailable on vertical live streams. YouTube recommends testing it with an unlisted stream first. It is a separate workflow from setting a broadcast to Members only at creation; if there should be no public portion, create it as members-only instead. Send a continuous feed to YouTube
The visibility setting controls who can watch; it does not generate the video. For an always-on broadcast, a source and encoder must keep sending a feed. YouTube documents both software encoders and standalone hardware encoders, so dedicated hardware is optional. Choose based on your production needs and how you will monitor and recover the stream, rather than assuming an encoder type makes it uninterrupted.

- Create or schedule the broadcast: In YouTube Studio on a computer, select Create → Go live, configure the stream, and set its visibility and membership access as described above.
- Get the connection details: In YouTube Studio’s stream setup, copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with viewers.
- Configure your encoder: In the software or hardware encoder’s stream settings, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key. Set up your video source and audio, then start the encoder.
- Confirm the feed in YouTube: Check the Live Control Room preview and verify that both picture and sound are reaching YouTube before relying on the broadcast.
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive guidance is not a guarantee of perpetual playback or uninterrupted operation. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Plan for monitoring and interruptions
YouTube does not promise a 24/7 stream will run without interruption. For encoder events, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead, starting it at least 15 minutes before the event, checking the preview, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Those are event-planning recommendations, but they are useful checks for a continuous broadcast too. - Confirm the stream remains visible to the intended membership audience after setup.
- Check picture and sound in the preview rather than assuming an encoder’s “live” indicator means YouTube is receiving a usable feed.
- Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder using the new key.
- Do not treat automatic archiving of streams under 12 hours as a way to guarantee 24/7 availability.
Common problems and what to check
Members cannot watch
Confirm the broadcast visibility is Members only and that the viewer belongs to the selected audience: all paid members, or the chosen level and above. Also check that the relevant membership level and perk have been created and published in YouTube Studio.
The encoder is running, but YouTube has no usable preview
Check that the encoder has the stream URL and key copied from the correct YouTube broadcast, and that its video and audio sources are active. Verify receipt in Live Control Room before considering the feed established.

The public-to-members-only change is unavailable
Check whether the broadcast is vertical. YouTube’s current guidance says the transition feature is unavailable for vertical live streams. If you do not need a public portion, create a members-only stream from the start instead.
The first live stream is not ready immediately
YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Check channel verification and live-streaming eligibility before scheduling a broadcast.
