Use OBS Studio’s Media Source to play the recorded sermon and add the church logo as an Image Source above it. Then check the audio, connect OBS to your streaming destination, and rehearse the full stream before the service. The steps below use YouTube Live as an example; the church can use another destination, but its connection settings will differ.
What you need before opening OBS
- The recorded Kannada sermon video file on the computer running OBS.
- A logo image file. For a transparent background, use an image format that supports an alpha channel, such as PNG.
- OBS Studio installed on that computer and a streaming destination account with permission to go live.
- A reliable internet connection and enough upload capacity for the output settings you choose.
OBS lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM for Media Source, and image formats including BMP, TGA, PNG, JPEG, JPG, and GIF for Image Source. Supported formats do not guarantee that every individual file will behave as expected, so preview the actual sermon and check its sound and any visible text before the service. See the official OBS Media Sources guide and OBS Image Sources guide.
Build the sermon scene and place the logo
- Create a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene for the service, such as “Kannada Sermon.”
- Add the recording. In the Sources panel, select the plus button, choose Media Source, create or select a source, and browse to the sermon video. Confirm the preview shows the intended recording.
- Set playback behavior. For a single service, leave Loop off unless the recording is meant to repeat. Decide whether the source should restart when it becomes active and what should appear after playback ends; OBS Media Source provides controls for these behaviors. If the recording must repeat, enable Loop and test the transition at the end.
- Add the logo. In Sources, select the plus button, choose Image, and select the logo file.
- Put the logo above the video. In the Sources list, move the Image Source above the sermon Media Source. Higher sources display over lower ones.
- Position and size it. Select the logo in the preview and resize or move it to a low-distraction area. Keep it clear of the preacher, scripture text, and subtitles, and check that it remains legible at the output size.
OBS documents adding, ordering, moving, and resizing scene sources in its Sources Guide.
Check sermon audio and choose output settings
Verify the sound
Play the recording and watch OBS’s audio mixer meters. A visible picture does not confirm that sermon audio is reaching the stream. If the meters do not move, or the wrong sound source is captured, check the selected audio devices and source settings. Listen to the stream preview or a private test as well as watching the meters. OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers checking mixer activity and selecting audio devices.

Match resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to the file and connection
Choose output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on the sermon file, your computer and upload capacity, and the destination’s current limits. A mostly static sermon recording may not need 60 fps; higher frame rates can demand more resources than 30 fps. Do not assume a preset is suitable without checking stream health during a test. OBS explains that bitrate depends on upload speed and destination limits in its Studio Overview Guide; YouTube’s current encoder guidance is in Choose live encoder settings. No one bitrate or resolution is right for every church setup.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live (example)
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream in the Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key provided for that stream into OBS’s stream settings.
- Keep the stream key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to the channel’s stream.
- Start streaming from OBS and check the incoming preview and stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- If the stream is scheduled, use the Live Control Room’s Go live step when you are ready to begin the broadcast.
YouTube says first-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, so complete that setup well before a service if the channel has never streamed live. The full encoder workflow is documented in Create a live stream with an encoder. Other destinations have their own stream URL, key, and start procedures; follow their official instructions rather than assuming YouTube settings apply.

Rehearse before the service
Run a short test using the same scene, audio, and playback behavior planned for the service. Check the stream preview on the destination, not just the OBS canvas.
- Confirm the sermon starts at the intended point and is not unintentionally looping.
- Listen for clear, continuous audio and verify that the intended sermon sound—not an unintended device—is being sent.
- Check that the logo is visible, legible, and not covering the speaker or any important text.
- Watch the destination’s stream-health indicators and address warnings before the service.
- If you use a scheduled YouTube stream, confirm the correct scheduled event is selected and know who will press Go live.
OBS recommends testing before a first live broadcast. For YouTube-specific checks on bitrate and representative content, consult its encoder settings guidance.

Troubleshooting common problems
- The logo is hidden behind the sermon: Move its Image Source above the Media Source in the Sources list.
- The logo has an opaque box: Check whether the chosen image actually has transparency; the file extension alone does not guarantee a transparent background.
- The video plays but the stream has no sermon audio: Check the Media Source and audio mixer meters, then confirm the correct audio device or source is selected. Test the destination preview with sound.
- The recording repeats unexpectedly: Turn off Loop for a one-time service and review what OBS should show after playback ends.
- The stream preview is unstable or shows warnings: Recheck bitrate against available upload capacity and the destination’s limits. Test a lower-demand output setting if the computer or connection cannot sustain the current one.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS stream: Verify the stream URL and key for the correct Live Control Room event. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow for YouTube’s stated activation period.
- A playlist or media item will not load in VLC Video: OBS says VLC must be installed and its bitness must match 64-bit OBS. For one local sermon file, Media Source is the more direct option.
Check rights and content before broadcasting
Use a sermon recording and any music, images, or other material in it only when the church has the necessary rights or permissions for a live broadcast. A church logo overlay does not grant rights to material in the recording. YouTube’s live-stream rules and copyright handling can affect whether a broadcast remains available; review the platform’s applicable policies and check any claims or restrictions on the channel before the service. Avoid assuming that a recording is cleared merely because the church can play it in person.
