Before choosing a server or starting the stream, confirm that your channel is eligible, the VPS can sustain the required outbound traffic under its current regional terms, and you have the necessary rights to broadcast every track. YouTube does not require a particular Linux distribution or encoder package; the exact commands depend on the system and software you choose.
1. Check that your YouTube channel can stream
In YouTube Studio, check that live streaming is available for your channel before setting up the VPS. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this check until launch day. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance has the current requirements.
2. Confirm the VPS can sustain the stream
A 24/7 broadcast sends video and audio continuously from the VPS to YouTube. The relevant capacity is sustained outbound bandwidth, along with any traffic allowance, overage charges, and service terms for the exact OVHcloud product and region you intend to use.
YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the stream’s bitrate. This is general network guidance, not a measurement of OVHcloud VPS performance. Check the current product page and account terms for the specific VPS, region, outbound limits, and traffic billing before purchase. OVHcloud’s general bandwidth FAQ says bandwidth is shared and not guaranteed, and that public traffic limits may vary by service or region; it does not establish an outbound guarantee or cap for every VPS plan. Do not assume a plan is suitable based on a headline connection figure.

- Choose the output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate before estimating sustained traffic.
- Check whether the traffic allowance resets, whether overages are charged, and what happens if you exceed it.
- Plan to test the actual VPS connection and monitor stream health after launch rather than relying solely on a plan description.
OVHcloud notes that customers are responsible for VPS software and security administration. Keep the operating system and encoder maintained, restrict access, and protect the credentials used to administer the server. See OVHcloud’s VPS security guidance.
3. Prepare a playlist and secure the music rights
Do not start by assuming that tracks you can listen to are cleared for a public, continuous livestream. YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for obtaining the necessary rights worldwide, including music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights holders. A personal streaming subscription or a generic “royalty-free” label does not by itself establish permission for this use.

Before adding a track, confirm in writing with the relevant rights holders or licensor that your permission covers a public live broadcast, the territories where the stream may be viewed, and any archived playback. Ask whether your channel must be added to a Content ID allowlist. Keep copies of licenses and confirmations. These are platform requirements; the exact legal rights and obligations can also vary by country.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may replace the stream with a placeholder and can lead to interruption or termination if the content remains. Even if you have a license, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for the stream not to be interrupted. Review YouTube’s terms and its guidance on live-streaming copyrighted content.

4. Configure an encoder on the VPS
You need encoder software that can read or loop your prepared video and audio, encode them in a format YouTube accepts, and send the output continuously. YouTube’s documentation describes encoder streaming but does not mandate a specific Linux distribution, command, or automation package. Choose software compatible with your VPS operating system and verify its restart, logging, and monitoring behavior before relying on it for a 24/7 broadcast.
Choose output settings deliberately
YouTube currently documents RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the matching values in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance rather than choosing an arbitrary bitrate. A still image over music may need less video data than moving footage, but the encoder output still must fit the selected settings and available upload bandwidth.

- Set the encoder to loop the playlist or source according to the software’s documented method.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Select a documented codec, resolution, and frame rate, then use YouTube’s matching bitrate guidance.
- Check that audio is present, correctly mixed, and encoded in a supported format.
- Run a test long enough to check for audio gaps, playlist transitions, dropped frames, and network instability.
5. Connect the VPS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live, then open the Live Control Room for the broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. Use the RTMPS URL provided there; RTMPS adds TLS encryption to RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Enter the RTMPS URL and key in your encoder’s streaming destination settings. Store the key as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Confirm that the intended audio and video are present before making the stream public or announcing it.
- Keep logs and monitoring available, and verify that your chosen software restarts or alerts you if the process or connection fails. YouTube’s setup guidance does not specify a VPS process manager, so use the restart and monitoring instructions for your selected operating system and encoder.
6. Troubleshoot common failures
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification and restrictions in YouTube Studio. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no signal: Confirm the encoder is running, the RTMPS URL and stream key match the Live Control Room, and outbound connectivity is available from the VPS.
- Connection is unstable or frames drop: Compare the configured bitrate with sustained outbound capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and check the VPS plan’s traffic or network conditions.
- Audio is silent or breaks between tracks: Check the encoder’s audio input, supported codec, playlist transition behavior, and test recording before restarting the public stream.
- A track triggers a copyright interruption: Stop or replace the material as needed, review the claim in YouTube Studio, and contact the rights holder about permissions and Content ID allowlisting. A license does not automatically prevent an automated match.
- The stream stops when the encoder process exits: Investigate the VPS and encoder logs, then configure a tested restart or alerting method appropriate to your OS and software. Do not assume YouTube will restart a process running on your server.
7. Cost and operational trade-offs
The total cost is not just the VPS rental: account for sustained outbound traffic, any applicable overage, storage for playlist media, and the time needed to secure and monitor the server. OVHcloud’s general bandwidth FAQ does not establish current outbound allowances or guarantees for a specific VPS, so confirm those terms for your selected region and plan before committing. A self-managed VPS offers control over the encoder and environment, but you are responsible for server security, process recovery, and monitoring.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a VPS encoder configured and monitored, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload your recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not broadcast from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
