Yes, it is plausible, but it is not guaranteed for every M2 MacBook Air or every 4K file. OBS can loop a local video and stream using Apple VideoToolbox H.264 on Apple Silicon, and YouTube accepts live video up to 4K at 60 fps. Whether the Air can keep your particular stream healthy depends on the source, encoder settings, upload stability, and a sustained test.
What the M2 Air can do—and what the specifications do not prove
For this task, the Mac must play a prerecorded file, repeat it, encode the picture as a live stream, and send it to YouTube. That is different from watching a 4K video online.
Apple lists hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW, along with video decode and encode engines, for the 13-inch MacBook Air (M2, 2022). Those capabilities make video encoding and decoding a plausible workload, but Apple does not publish a benchmark certifying a continuous OBS 4K60 live loop on this model. The Air’s built-in display is 2560 × 1664, and Apple lists support for one external display up to 6K at 60Hz. Neither number sets the maximum resolution of a stream: OBS output resolution is a separate setting from the Mac’s display resolution.

Check YouTube’s 4K60 ingest settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance accessed in 2026 lists these bitrate figures for 4K/2160p at 60 fps:

These are encoder bitrate settings, not guaranteed minimum internet-plan speeds. Network overhead and upload variation mean you need headroom beyond the configured bitrate. The cited OBS Apple Silicon guidance confirms H.264 streaming through VideoToolbox; it does not establish that every codec YouTube accepts is available through OBS’s Apple hardware encoder. - Use constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube specifies for live ingest.
- Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Choose RTMP or RTMPS ingest as supported by the streaming setup.
- Use H.264 with Apple VideoToolbox as the documented Apple Silicon path in OBS.
Set up a looping video in OBS
- Add the recording: In OBS, add a Media Source and select the local video file. Turn on Loop. OBS also provides a hardware-decoding option; enable it if available and useful for your source format. Control names can vary by OBS version. OBS Media Sources
- Set the output: In OBS output settings, select a streaming encoder using Apple VideoToolbox H.264. Configure the bitrate for YouTube’s H.264 guidance, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Set output resolution to 3840 × 2160 and frame rate to 60 only if the file and the full workflow support those settings.
- Connect YouTube: Create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio and enter the stream key in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it. Use an unlisted test stream first if you want to verify the setup without a public broadcast.
- Check upload and stream health: Test the actual upload path and watch YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators during a test at your intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Leave the test running long enough to assess the workload you intend to use; a short successful start does not establish that a much longer session will remain stable. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
Plan for a stable upload, not just a fast download
For 4K60 H.264, YouTube’s recommended encoder setting is 50 Mbps. A connection must sustain that outgoing stream with room for variation and overhead; a speed test is a useful check, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Prefer a stable connection, and avoid other activity that competes for upload bandwidth while streaming.
YouTube’s separate recommendation of 20 Mbps sustained speed applies to watching 4K UHD video. It is viewer download guidance, not a live creator’s upload target. YouTube video playback system requirements

Troubleshoot an unstable 4K60 loop
- YouTube reports dropped frames or poor stream health: Check upload stability and competing network use. If the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate, reduce the bitrate or output resolution and test again.
- The stream starts but does not stay healthy: Recheck the encoder’s CBR setting, keyframe interval, and selected resolution and frame rate. Monitor the full test rather than relying only on the initial preview.
- The loop stops or shows a blank source: Confirm the Media Source points to the correct local file and that Loop is enabled. Verify the selected file plays in OBS before going live.
- 4K60 remains unreliable: Try a less demanding output, such as 4K30 or 1080p60, then assess stream health. The best fallback depends on whether resolution, frame rate, or available upload capacity is the limiting factor.
YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch; that does not remove the need for a healthy incoming feed. YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
