For a YouTube Live stream at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube’s current English encoder guidance recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Set a constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them: test your stream and lower the bitrate if OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube reports stream-health problems.
Recommended bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps
YouTube’s current English-language live encoder table gives different recommendations by ingestion codec. The minimums below are YouTube’s published figures; meeting a minimum does not ensure a stable stream.
| Ingestion codec | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.265 / HEVC | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current English live-ingestion recommendations, checked on October 4, 2026. Confirm the current values in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance before a production stream, since platform recommendations can change.
Set up OBS for 1080p30
- Set the output resolution and frame rate. In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080 and Common FPS Values to 30. Check the output-scaled resolution, not only the canvas resolution. OBS describes these controls in its Studio Overview Guide.
- Choose your encoder and bitrate. Open Settings → Output, select Output Mode: Advanced if needed to expose the streaming controls, then use the Streaming section. Select the codec you intend to send to YouTube and enter its recommended bitrate from the table above. OBS interface labels can vary by version and selected encoder.
- Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. In the streaming encoder settings, set the rate-control mode to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS; select the server and protocol shown for your YouTube stream setup.
- Connect OBS to your YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or open the stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s Settings → Stream service configuration. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream. Verify that the correct stream is selected before starting.
- Run a representative test before the event. Include motion and audio like those in the planned stream. Start the stream, inspect YouTube’s stream-health status and messages, and watch OBS’s dropped-frame indicator. YouTube explicitly recommends testing and monitoring rather than relying only on encoder values.
For current YouTube protocol, codec, keyframe and bitrate requirements, use YouTube’s live encoder settings page. For the OBS locations of video and output controls, see the OBS overview.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
Start with the recommendation for your codec, then validate it on the actual connection and route you will use. A speed-test result is useful evidence about upload capacity, but it does not prove that the connection will remain stable at that bitrate throughout a live stream. YouTube advises choosing quality that can be reliably streamed on your internet connection; OBS notes that bitrate is constrained by both upload speed and the streaming service.
- If the stream remains stable during a representative test, the recommended setting is a sensible target.
- If OBS shows dropped frames or YouTube flags stream health, check connection stability and reduce the bitrate in measured steps, then test again.
- If the test is clean at a lower bitrate but not at the recommendation, prioritize reliability over the nominal target.
The stable bitrate for a particular household, ISP route, server or time of day cannot be inferred from the published table alone. For general context, see YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and OBS connection troubleshooting.

Troubleshoot bitrate and stream-health problems
OBS reports dropped frames
OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Confirm that no other device or upload is consuming most of the available upstream capacity, check the connection and server selection, and lower the video bitrate before testing again. The OBS guide does not establish that a particular accessory or network change will fix every case.
YouTube reports poor stream health
Read the specific message in YouTube’s live control room and compare it with OBS’s status. Check the selected output resolution, frame rate, encoder, CBR mode and keyframe interval, then run another test. Do not assume that increasing bitrate will fix a stream-health warning; first identify whether the issue is configuration, connection stability or another message-specific cause.

The stream looks soft after reducing bitrate
Lower bitrate can reduce image detail, especially in scenes with movement. If the connection cannot reliably carry the codec’s recommended bitrate, a stable lower-rate 1080p30 stream may be preferable to recurring drops. Test the actual material you plan to show before choosing between image detail and reliability.
