Studio Ghibli’s September 2020 announcement released 400 still images—50 apiece from eight films—and said viewers could use them “within the bounds of common sense.” The release was followed by more batches, but that phrase is not a detailed license covering every kind of reuse.
Which films were in the first release?
On September 18, 2020, Studio Ghibli announced that it would publish still images from its films in sequence. The first batch contained 50 images from each of these eight films:
- When Marnie Was There
- The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
- The Wind Rises
- From Up on Poppy Hill
- Arrietty
- Ponyo
- Tales from Earthsea
- Spirited Away
The studio described the images as available for use with the Japanese wording “常識の範囲でご自由にお使いください,” closely rendered as “Please feel free to use them within the bounds of common sense.” Studio Ghibli’s September 18, 2020 announcement.
How the image collection grew
The initial “more to come” referred to a sequence of updates. Studio Ghibli called its December 2020 release the final update in that run; it later added images in August 2023.

Can you use Studio Ghibli’s released images?
The studio’s announcements invite use “within the bounds of common sense,” but do not define a comprehensive set of permissions. They do not spell out specific rules for commercial use, attribution, alteration, republication or geographic scope. So the announcement should not be treated as an unqualified worldwide commercial license or as proof that every conceivable reuse is permitted. The relevant wording appears in the release notices, including the first announcement and the December 2020 update.

In a separate notice dated December 9, 2024, Studio Ghibli said it had found shops and online shops selling framed images and paintings taken from its films, books and other publications. It called those products unauthorized reproductions infringing its intellectual property and said it intended to take strict civil and criminal action as applicable.
