Trump held the meeting at the White House on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025. The Associated Press reported that it was his final Cabinet meeting of the year and described his eyes occasionally drooping and shutting while officials delivered presentations. The meeting lasted more than two hours, according to AP.
The Washington Post reported a total duration of 2 hours and 17 minutes. It also noted that Trump criticized a New York Times article about his schedule and stamina early in the meeting, saying, “Right now, I think I’m sharper than I was 25 years ago.”
How long did Trump appear to close his eyes?
The Washington Post said its analysis of multiple video feeds found nine separate instances during a roughly 75-minute stretch in which Trump’s eyes were closed for extended periods or he appeared to struggle to keep them open. The Post calculated that the instances added up to nearly six minutes. That is the newspaper’s description and analysis of the footage, not a medical measurement or proof that he was asleep.

Did Trump fall asleep?
The available reporting supports saying that Trump appeared drowsy or appeared to struggle to stay awake. It does not establish that he fell asleep. Video can show eye movements and posture, but the cited reports do not establish what he was experiencing or why.
What did the White House say?
The Washington Post reported that an unnamed White House official initially said Trump was not sleeping. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later told the Post that he was “listening attentively and running the entire” meeting, and praised his final answer at the press conference. The Post noted that Leavitt’s statement did not directly resolve whether Trump had dozed off.

What Trump said about the meeting’s length
Before Cabinet officials spoke, Trump said, “We’re gonna go quickly,” AP reported. Later, he acknowledged, “We’re spending a lot of time in here.” The remarks came during a meeting that both outlets described as lasting more than two hours.

What the footage and reports can—and cannot—show
- What was observed: AP described Trump’s eyes fluttering, drooping and closing during officials’ presentations. The Post separately counted nine instances of extended eye closure or apparent difficulty keeping his eyes open.
- What is not established: The reports do not prove he was asleep, and they identify no cause or health diagnosis. The footage should not be used to infer sleep deprivation, illness or medication effects.
