Lee’s novel The Expatriates. Set in Hong Kong, it follows Margaret, Hilary, and Mercy as their lives become entangled after the disappearance of Margaret’s young son, Gus. The series is a character drama about grief, class, migration, blame, and accountability—not simply a mystery about what happened to Gus.
What is Expats about?
Margaret (Nicole Kidman), Hilary (Sarayu Blue), and Mercy (Ji-young Yoo) are American women living in Hong Kong. When Margaret’s son Gus disappears, the event reshapes the women’s relationships and daily lives. The series follows the consequences across their different circumstances rather than treating the disappearance as a puzzle with a single, easy answer.
Hong Kong is more than a backdrop. Wang has said she wanted the city to have its own arc, and the story engages with the lives of people who call it home as well as those of its expatriate residents. In a February 16, 2024 interview with TIME, Wang described the need to reckon with the city’s history, present, wounds, hopes, dreams, and fears.

What does the Hong Kong setting add?
The series places private grief alongside questions of privilege, labor, migration, and belonging. The 2014 Umbrella Movement is part of the story’s historical context, while the episode “Central” brings local residents and domestic workers into clearer view. Wang has described her aim as representing Hong Kong as a character, not just scenery. That is her stated creative intention; the series’ treatment of these subjects is best understood as drama rather than a comprehensive account of Hong Kong or its political history.
