The Brutalist is not a true story about a real architect named László Tóth. Tóth, his wife Erzsébet, wealthy patron Harrison Lee Van Buren and their particular story are fictional. The real element is the history and architecture behind the fiction: the filmmakers drew on several real architects’ experiences, especially those of Hungarian-born Marcel Breuer, and connected Brutalism’s immigrant makers to the film’s themes of displacement and exile.
Is The Brutalist based on a true story?
No. The film is not a dramatization of one architect’s life, and László Tóth is not a disguised account of a specific real person. The Venice Film Festival’s synopsis describes Tóth as a Hungarian-born Jewish architect who emigrates to the United States in 1947; those are details of the fictional character’s backstory, not proof that a real architect with that biography inspired the plot.
Editor Dávid Jancsó put the distinction plainly in an interview with Art of the Cut: “No, it is absolutely not based on a true story. It is based on many true stories. It could be true. It should be true. It is true. Our characters are all fictional.” In other words, the film draws on real histories and experiences without presenting its characters as real people.
Which real architects influenced László Tóth?
Director Brady Corbet and co-writer Mona Fastvold initially looked for a historical architect whose established career had been derailed by wartime displacement and exile. Their consultant, architectural historian Jean-Louis Cohen, could not identify one person who matched that story. The filmmakers instead invented the Tóths and drew on the experiences of more than one architect.

The production notes name Louis Kahn and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe among the influences on Tóth’s American experience, with Marcel Breuer as the strongest named influence. That makes Tóth a composite fictional character, not a biography of Breuer—or of Kahn or Mies van der Rohe.
Actor Alessandro Nivola has also described Tóth as fictional and loosely based on different real people. The distinction matters: a character can reflect aspects of real lives without mapping neatly onto any one person.

Was Harrison Lee Van Buren based on a real patron?
The available statements do not establish a single real-life model for Van Buren. Actor Guy Pearce told the BFI that the character was based on “No one specific.” It would therefore be misleading to identify Van Buren as a portrayal of a particular wealthy patron or to treat the character as a factual portrait.

The film’s connection to reality is its broader historical and artistic grounding, not a true plot hidden inside the fiction. Its story draws on the experiences of architects shaped by war, displacement and immigration, while its central architect and his relationships remain invented.

Corbet’s production notes link Brutalism’s monumental, often divisive buildings to the immigrant experience. He described the style’s buildings as “strange objects that are loved and loathed in equal measure” and said their slow acceptance by the public mirrored the immigrant experience. He also characterized Brutalism as a style “predominantly created by immigrants.” This is the director’s stated interpretation of the connection between the film’s architecture and themes—not evidence that the Institute in the film is a real building or that a real László Tóth designed it.
Reading about Marcel Breuer or postwar architecture can add useful context for the film’s influences, but it cannot turn Tóth into a historical person. The most accurate distinction is: fictional characters and plot, shaped by real architectural figures and historical experiences.
