To examine how sexual assault culture appears on screen, start with the documentary Rape Culture, then widen the lens with the scholarly collection Screening #MeToo: Rape Culture in Hollywood. RAINN’s film and television guidance offers a practical standard for considering how stories handle consent, survivor credibility, power, and institutional response. These works help analyze representation; they are not measures of how often assault occurs or proof that watching a film changes viewers’ attitudes.
Three useful starting points
Rape Culture: a historical media-focused documentary
The U.S. National Library of Medicine catalogs Rape Culture as a documentary examining popular films, advertising, music, and adult entertainment. The catalog describes perspectives from rape crisis workers and anti-rape activists. Its record dates to a 1983 edition and notes that it was issued in various formats, so that catalog entry should not be treated as a complete account of the film’s release history. See the National Library of Medicine catalog record.
As a viewing choice, it offers a direct historical anchor: notice what media conventions it identifies, how it frames the relationship between entertainment and sexual violence, and which voices it includes. Its age is also part of the discussion. Compare its framing with present-day language and debates rather than treating one documentary as a definitive account of every era or medium.
Screening #MeToo: Rape Culture in Hollywood: a broader genre lens
This scholarly collection uses essays to examine sexual violence in films across genres and the relationship between film narratives and the culture that produced them. The book record lists films from the 1960s onward, including spy films, teen comedies, dramas, coming-of-age stories, rape-revenge films, and horror. That range makes it useful for asking how different genres normalize, challenge, or rework assumptions about consent and power. The record establishes the collection’s scope, not the argument of every individual chapter. View the JSTOR record.

RAINN’s guidance: a practical storytelling resource
RAINN, a sexual violence prevention and support organization, publishes guidance for responsible storytelling in film and television. Its page names Luckiest Girl Alive and Miranda’s Victim in connection with its entertainment work; RAINN also says it provided trauma-informed guidance to the cast and creators of Blink Twice for the film’s publicity tour. Those are examples of organizational involvement, not independent verdicts on whether a film succeeds, how audiences received it, or what effects it had. Read RAINN’s responsible-storytelling guidance and its entertainment collaboration examples.
How to assess a film’s portrayal
Rather than labeling a film universally “accurate” or “inaccurate,” examine what the story shows and whose perspective shapes it. These questions work for documentaries as well as fictional films:

- 1 subject notebook comes with 70 wide ruled, double-sided sheets. Wide ruling is ideal for the younger student who needs more space between lines.
- Sheets measure 7-1/2" x 10-1/2" when torn out with an overall size of 8" x 10-1/2". Perforation easily tears out with clean edges.
- Notebook is 3-hole punched to store in your favorite binder. Covers are coated for durability and have writable label on front cover.
- Includes 6 notebooks in randomly selected colors: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Purple or Black. Colors will vary with each purchase.
- Assembled in U.S.A. with U.S. and foreign parts
- Focus: Does the work center an individual experience, an institution’s response, media conventions, or a wider social pattern?
- Point of view: Whose account drives the narrative? Are survivors treated as full characters, and whose perspective or experience is missing?
- Depiction and framing: What is shown or withheld? Does the storytelling sensationalize violence, or make consent, coercion, and power legible?
- Consequences and accountability: How do friends, schools, employers, police, courts, or other institutions respond within the story?
- Context and support: Does the film or its accompanying material provide credible context or point viewers to support resources?
These are interpretive questions, not a clinical checklist or a guarantee that one viewing will produce a particular understanding. RAINN’s production guidance provides a concrete example of one form of support: “Take a simple, powerful step toward trauma-informed storytelling by including RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline in your production or promotional materials, including title cards, credits, companion websites, and social media posts.” This is RAINN’s practical recommendation for creators, not a universal test for judging a film.

“Rape culture” is a framework for analyzing cultural assumptions and representations, not a statistic. A film can prompt questions about how consent, credibility, and institutional power are portrayed; it cannot establish how common sexual assault is or serve as evidence that media exposure causes a particular attitude or behavior.

For U.S. context, RAINN’s statistics page, updated September 2026, reports an estimate of 443,634 rapes and sexual assaults annually against people age 12 and older, attributing it to the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ Criminal Victimization, 2024, published in September 2025. The figure counts estimated victimizations, not distinct people. RAINN provides the estimate and its source notes.
Measurement methods matter. The CDC identifies the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS), Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS), and Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) as major U.S. systems for measuring sexual victimization. Police-based reporting covers crimes known to law enforcement, so it does not capture all sexual violence; survey estimates and administrative reports should not be combined as if they measured the same population in the same way. See the CDC overview of U.S. measurement systems and RAINN’s explanation of its statistical sources.
