The principal cast of Twister went on to work across film and television, but the available cast retrospective is dated July 19, 2024—not a complete account of everyone’s life or projects in 2026. One important update is definitive: Bill Paxton, who played storm chaser Bill Harding, died in 2017. Here is what the published record establishes about the film’s principal ensemble and selected supporting performers.
Who was in the 1996 film?
Directed by Jan de Bont and written by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin, Twister follows Jo Harding, played by Helen Hunt, and her former partner Bill Harding, played by Bill Paxton, as they test tornado-research equipment. Their fictional device is named Dorothy. Cary Elwes plays Dr. Jonas Miller, who leads a rival team, and Jami Gertz plays Melissa, who becomes part of the personal conflict. The ensemble also includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Lois Smith and Alan Ruck. Amblin’s film page gives the official synopsis and cast; Rotten Tomatoes’ cast listing identifies Smith as Meg Greene, Ruck as Robert “Rabbit” Nurick and Hoffman as Dustin Davis.
What happened to the principal cast?
The career milestones below come from a Us Weekly retrospective published July 19, 2024. They are selected highlights, not exhaustive filmographies or proof of current projects.
Helen Hunt (Jo Harding)
After Twister, Hunt’s screen credits included As Good as It Gets, Pay It Forward, Cast Away and The Sessions. She also returned to her television role in the Mad About You revival. In a July 2024 interview with Entertainment Weekly, quoted by Us Weekly, Hunt praised the ensemble’s acting background and sense of humor: “He chose really good theater actors — classically trained actors with a sense of humor — not lightweights. Everybody was these good, solid actors.”

How does Twisters connect to the original?
In an Associated Press report published April 26, 2024, before the new film’s release, Twisters was described as a standalone chapter with new storm-chaser characters—not a direct continuation featuring the original cast. The report named Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos and Glen Powell as its stars and said none of the 1996 characters return. The connection is in the legacy of the original’s Dorothy sensors and references to fictional Muskogee State University. Read the AP report.
What the record can—and cannot—say about “where they are now”
The July 2024 retrospective also reports that Twister was the second-highest-grossing film of 1996 and received Academy Award nominations for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects. Those are historical milestones, not current box-office figures. More broadly, the available dated account documents selected career landmarks; it does not establish a comprehensive October 2026 update for every principal and supporting performer.
