The U.S. Army held its 250th-anniversary parade and festival in Washington, D.C., on June 14, 2025—the same day Donald Trump turned 79. The Army’s anniversary was the stated reason for the event, while the birthday coincidence became a focus of political debate. The event featured thousands of soldiers, tanks, aircraft and equipment from different eras; its cost was later reported as $30 million by the Army.
What was the parade celebrating?
The event marked 250 years since the Continental Army was established on June 14, 1775. The Army staged a parade and festival in Washington, D.C., on June 14, 2025, to mark that anniversary. Trump’s 79th birthday fell on the same date, making the overlap central to public discussion without changing the Army’s stated anniversary rationale. Associated Press coverage and Army information described the anniversary context.
What did the event include?
Event-day Associated Press reporting described more than 6,000 soldiers and 128 Army tanks, as well as parachute activity, flyovers and military equipment spanning different eras. The festival and parade combined historical uniforms and equipment with modern military hardware. Pre-event previews used broader estimates—thousands of troops, hundreds of vehicles and dozens of aircraft—so those preview figures should not be treated as final event-day counts. Why did the birthday coincidence become controversial?
Supporters and military families attended the celebration, while critics objected to the expense, the display of military power on city streets and the timing on Trump’s birthday. On June 14, the Associated Press reported protests across the country under the “No Kings” banner and opposition to Trump. Roll Call’s pre-event coverage reported Democratic criticism of the parade’s cost and political framing. Those objections were part of the event’s public reception; they do not establish that Trump’s birthday was the Army’s sole reason for holding it.
