On 19 December 2024, a court convicted Dominique Pelicot and sentenced him to 20 years in prison for crimes against his then-wife, Gisèle Pelicot. Fifty co-defendants were also convicted. Pelicot did not appeal his sentence; reports at the appeal deadline said 17 co-defendants had appealed, but their later outcomes are not established here.
What happened in the Mazan case?
The trial opened in Avignon on 2 September 2024. Prosecutors alleged that Dominique Pelicot sedated Gisèle Pelicot and arranged for men he had contacted online to assault her while she was unconscious. The case concerned assaults over a period of years. Those allegations were the prosecution’s account at the opening of the trial, not a description that should be applied indiscriminately to every incident or every defendant. The Guardian’s trial-opening report set out the allegations and identified the case.
Who are Gisèle and Dominique Pelicot?
Gisèle Pelicot was the victim at the center of the case; Dominique Pelicot was her then-husband and the principal defendant. She waived her anonymity so the trial could be held publicly. During the proceedings, she said, “Shame must change sides,” as reported by The Guardian’s verdict coverage.
What did the court decide?
On 19 December 2024, the Vaucluse criminal court found Dominique Pelicot guilty and sentenced him to 20 years in prison. The 50 other men tried alongside him were also convicted, with reported sentences ranging from three to 15 years. These outcomes are reported in The Guardian’s account of the verdict.
