Bob Bryar was My Chemical Romance’s drummer from 2004 until he left the band in 2010. He played on The Black Parade, received co-writing credits on that album, and contributed to writing and recordings during the Danger Days era. He joined after original drummer Matt Pelissier left, so Bryar was not the drummer on the original Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge studio album.
How Bob Bryar joined My Chemical Romance
Before joining the band, Bryar worked as a sound engineer, including on tour. Pitchfork reported that he met My Chemical Romance while working on the road; after the band parted ways with Pelissier, they approached Bryar. The Associated Press also reports that he replaced Pelissier in 2004.
He joined while My Chemical Romance was touring behind Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. He became part of the band’s live presence during that album’s era and appeared in music videos from it. Those later appearances do not mean he played on the album’s original studio recording.
What he contributed to the band’s music
The Black Parade
Bryar performed on My Chemical Romance’s 2006 album The Black Parade and received co-writing credits. Pitchfork points to the marching-band roll in “Welcome to the Black Parade” and the fills in “Dead!” as examples of his drumming.

The Danger Days era
The band began recording songs in 2009 that would become Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. Bryar was involved in this period and received writing credits on some songs, but he left before the album’s 2010 release. His participation in the sessions should not be confused with being in the band when the album came out.
Conventional Weapons
Ten previously unreleased My Chemical Romance songs featuring Bryar were issued in 2012 and 2013 as Conventional Weapons. They had all been recorded before he left the band. Their later release date is not the date of his performance or the original recording sessions.

Why did Bob Bryar leave the band?
My Chemical Romance announced its separation from Bryar in 2010. In the statement quoted by Pitchfork, the band called it “a painful decision for all of us to make and was not taken lightly.” The statement gives the band’s characterization of the decision, but does not name a specific reason.
The reporting cited here establishes that Bryar left, but not that he was “fired” or why the separation happened. Claims about creative disagreements, personal conflict, injury, or other rumored causes should not be treated as confirmed explanations on this evidence.

- When considering Danger Days, distinguish Bryar’s work during the writing and recording period from the album’s release: he had left before it came out.
- For the ten later-issued songs, look to Conventional Weapons; those recordings were made before his departure, even though they were released in 2012 and 2013.
