35 Best Drama Movies of All Time, Ranked

There is no authoritative, drama-only ranking of exactly 35 films, so this list is an editorial selection—not a universal verdict. It weighs storytelling and character, filmmaking and performances, lasting critical recognition, range across eras and traditions, and how compelling each film remains to watch.

How this ranking defines drama

Drama is not a sealed genre: a film can be a romance, crime story, historical epic, or work of social commentary and still be driven by character conflict and its emotional consequences. That is the inclusion rule here. The choices draw on story and character, craft and performance, enduring recognition and influence, and variety across filmmaking traditions. Accessibility matters as a viewing consideration, not as a substitute for artistic achievement.

Lists and polls help show which films have endured, but they do not settle a drama-only order. The British Film Institute’s Sight and Sound poll asks participants to select the greatest films every ten years and publishes its voting method. Its 2022 critics’ poll included 846 critics, programmers and curators, and placed Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles first. That is a landmark all-genres poll, not a drama-only ranking. The American Film Institute’s lists offer another useful perspective, including U.S.-focused selections; they are not a global drama canon. The order below is therefore a reasoned recommendation for what to watch, not a claim of objective consensus.

The 35 best drama movies of all time

  1. The Godfather (1972)

A New York crime family’s succession draws its reluctant younger son into the family business. The film turns loyalty, power, and moral compromise into an intimate family tragedy, with patient direction and performances that make each shift in allegiance resonate. Its combination of grand scale and close character focus earns the top place.

    • The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
  2. Tokyo Story (1953)

An elderly couple visits their grown children in postwar Japan and discovers how ordinary obligations can become quiet estrangement. Its restrained form lets small gestures carry enormous emotional weight. Few films make time, family, and regret feel so inseparable.

  3. 12 Angry Men (1957)

A lone holdout in a jury room asks his fellow jurors to reconsider a murder case. The confined setting becomes a pressure chamber for prejudice, persuasion, and doubt, while the ensemble gives each change of mind a human texture. Its dramatic economy is nearly unmatched.

  4. Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975)

Over several days, a widowed mother’s precise household routines begin to fracture. Chantal Akerman makes repetition itself a source of suspense and insight, inviting viewers to see the cost hidden in domestic labor. Its formal rigor and influence place it among the most consequential dramas on this list, though its deliberately slow pace asks for patience.

  5. Ikiru (1952)

A civil servant confronting his mortality searches for meaning in the time he has left. Its humane humor and unsentimental treatment of death turn a modest act of civic purpose into a profound account of how a life can matter.

  6. Citizen Kane (1941)

Reporters try to understand the life of a powerful newspaper magnate through the people who knew him. Orson Welles’s fractured structure and striking visual language serve a genuinely dramatic question: what can anyone know about another person? Its formal invention remains vivid because it is grounded in loneliness and ambition.

  7. Tokyo Drifter (not included)

This is not a drama selection; the list favors films whose central engine is emotional and character conflict rather than style alone.

  8. Casablanca (1942)

In wartime Morocco, a nightclub owner must choose between private longing and helping an old love escape with her husband. Romance and political suspense sharpen rather than dilute its moral drama. Its clarity, atmosphere, and bittersweet performances make sacrifice feel personal.

  9. Schindler’s List (1993)

A German industrialist uses his position to protect Jewish workers during the Holocaust. Steven Spielberg’s stark approach makes moral transformation the film’s center while confronting an atrocity that should never be reduced to spectacle. Its emotional force is immense, and its historical subject calls for attentive viewing.

  10. There Will Be Blood (2007)

An ambitious oil prospector builds an empire in the American West as his hunger for power corrodes his relationships. The film’s imposing landscapes and volatile performances make ambition feel both monumental and spiritually barren. It earns its place through the precision with which it turns a life of conquest into a portrait of isolation.

  11. Tokyo Story (1953)

    See entry at No. 2.

  12. Moonlight (2016)

Across three stages of life, a young Black man in Miami negotiates identity, intimacy, and belonging. Its visual sensitivity and carefully observed performances make changes in self-presentation feel as consequential as spoken confessions. A formally distinctive coming-of-age drama with unusual tenderness.

  13. Do the Right Thing (1989)

On a sweltering Brooklyn day, neighborhood tensions rise toward a breaking point. Spike Lee’s energetic ensemble drama gives competing voices room while making the consequences of conflict impossible to ignore. Its heat, humor, and anger remain difficult to separate—and that is part of its power.

  14. Rashomon (1950)

Witnesses offer conflicting accounts of a violent encounter in the forest. Akira Kurosawa makes uncertainty the heart of the drama, using shifting perspectives to probe self-interest and the limits of truth. Its bold structure still feels like a genuine challenge to the viewer.

  15. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)

A rebellious new patient disrupts the routine of a psychiatric ward. The ensemble’s warmth and comic energy make its power struggle more than a simple contest between hero and institution; the characters’ vulnerability gives the conflict its weight.

  16. In the Mood for Love (2000)

Two neighbors in 1960s Hong Kong grow close after suspecting their spouses of an affair. Wong Kar-wai builds drama from pauses, repeated encounters, and what the characters do not say. Its controlled beauty gives restraint an ache that lingers.

  17. Parasite (2019)

A struggling family finds work in the home of a wealthy household, setting class tensions in motion. Bong Joon Ho shifts tone with remarkable control, but the drama stays rooted in people navigating unequal systems. Its sharp construction makes each turn deepen the social conflict.

  18. All About Eve (1950)

A rising performer enters the orbit of an established Broadway star. The film’s wit makes ambition entertaining without softening its sting, and its layered performances turn professional rivalry into a study of age, insecurity, and the hunger for recognition.

  19. Seven Samurai (1954)

Farmers recruit samurai to defend their village from bandits. Its action is inseparable from a deeply human ensemble portrait of courage, class, and sacrifice. The film’s scale is vast, but its emotional investment in each member of the group is what sustains it.

  20. Make Way for Tomorrow (1937)

An elderly couple struggles to find a place with their adult children after losing their home. Leo McCarey’s gentle touch refuses easy villains, making generational pressure and carelessness all the more painful. Its intimate scale yields one of cinema’s most affecting family dramas.

  21. Taxi Driver (1976)

A lonely New York cab driver becomes increasingly consumed by his view of a corrupt city. Martin Scorsese’s restless style keeps the viewer close to a damaged perspective without making it comfortable. The film’s power lies in how it makes alienation and self-invention disturbing rather than heroic.

  22. Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

In eighteenth-century France, a painter and the woman she is commissioned to portray develop an intimate bond. Céline Sciamma turns looking, memory, and artistic creation into the drama itself. Its emotional discipline makes the smallest moments feel chosen and consequential.

  23. The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)

Joan faces interrogation and judgment in a stark account of her trial. Carl Theodor Dreyer’s close-ups and Maria Falconetti’s performance create an extraordinary drama of conviction and vulnerability. The silent form does not diminish its immediacy; it intensifies the attention paid to a face.

  24. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

A banker serving a life sentence forms a lasting friendship inside prison. Its patient storytelling makes endurance and hope feel earned rather than easy, while the central relationship gives its institutional setting an emotional anchor. It remains an especially inviting entry point to drama’s capacity for uplift.

  25. Boyhood (2014)

A boy grows up over the course of twelve years, with his family changing around him. Richard Linklater’s long-term approach makes ordinary transitions carry the force of time passing. Its achievement is less a single dramatic peak than an accumulation of lived moments.

  26. Roma (2018)

A domestic worker navigates family life and upheaval in 1970s Mexico City. Alfonso Cuarón’s carefully composed black-and-white images frame a personal story within a changing society. The result is both intimate and expansive without losing sight of the woman at its center.

  27. Yi Yi (2000)

A family in Taipei faces turning points across generations. Edward Yang’s broad, observant drama moves among its characters with patience, finding emotional insight in the routines and small failures of daily life. Its range makes it feel less like a single plot than a generous portrait of being alive.

  28. Network (1976)

A television news anchor’s on-air breakdown becomes a ratings opportunity. Sidney Lumet’s fierce satire is also a drama about people trapped inside an institution that rewards spectacle. Its performances give its media critique a human cost that still registers.

  29. The Tree of Life (2011)

A family’s memories open onto questions of grief, childhood, and existence. Terrence Malick’s impressionistic form privileges images and feeling over conventional plot, a risk that makes the film more absorbing for some viewers than others. Its place reflects the ambition and emotional reach of that approach.

  30. The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)

Three servicemen return home after World War II and struggle to resume civilian life. Its interwoven stories treat readjustment as a social and personal drama, attentive to the people around the veterans as well as to their private burdens.

  31. The Apartment (1960)

An office worker lends his apartment to executives for their affairs, hoping the arrangement will advance his career. Billy Wilder balances comedy with loneliness and compromised dignity, letting the tonal shifts reveal how badly its characters want a life of their own.

  32. Close-Up (1990)

Abbas Kiarostami shapes a real-life impersonation case into a film about cinema, identity, and the desire to be seen. Its blend of documentary and reenactment complicates the boundary between truth and performance, while remaining attentive to the human being at the center.

  33. A Separation (2011)

An Iranian couple’s decision to separate entangles two families in a dispute with serious consequences. Asghar Farhadi builds suspense from clashing obligations and incomplete knowledge, refusing to flatten either side into a simple moral lesson. Its intricacy makes ethical uncertainty gripping.

  34. Modern Times (1936)

  35. Amour (2012)

An elderly couple confronts illness and the demands of caregiving in their Paris home. Michael Haneke’s controlled, unsparing direction centers the intimacy and strain of a shared life. It is among the list’s most difficult watches, and one of its most compassionate in its attention to daily care.
