Spoilers for “The Black Spot,” episode 7 of It: Welcome to Derry. The episode turns the Black Spot fire into a devastating, character-centered tragedy: a racist mob traps the club’s patrons, Pennywise feeds amid the flames, and the survivors face a cover-up even as the military’s plans grow more dangerous.
What happens in “The Black Spot”?
The 63-minute episode, directed by Andy Muschietti and written by Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane, opens in 1908. Bob Gray performs as Pennywise the Dancing Clown at a carnival. His daughter Ingrid wants to become a clown, and Bob gives her the stage name Periwinkle. Later, a childlike figure in the woods asks Bob to help find its parents. Bob follows it and disappears.
The story then shifts to the Black Spot, where Clint Bowers and his gang demand that the patrons hand over Hank. The armed people inside force the gang to retreat, but the reprieve is brief: the mob returns, sets the club ablaze and shoots at people trying to escape.
Dick Hallorann communes with a spirit and discovers a concealed way out. He guides Hank, Will and Ronnie to safety while Pennywise hunts those trapped inside. Rich hides Marge in a refrigerator and tells her he loves her before he dies in the fire.

Ingrid arrives as Pennywise appears and kills Stan Kersh. The entity tells her it is not her father, exposes her to the deadlights, and then returns to hibernation. The episode’s revelations make Bob Gray’s disappearance part of the story of how the creature came to use Pennywise’s clown form, while refusing Ingrid the reunion she seems to be seeking.
Who dies, and who escapes?
The fire’s horror comes from the gulf between the people who find a way out and those left to face the flames and Pennywise. Hallorann’s supernatural sensitivity gives Hank, Will and Ronnie a route to safety; Rich’s decision to hide Marge protects her, but costs him his life. Stan Kersh is killed when Pennywise confronts Ingrid. The episode’s closing attack on Will leaves his fate in immediate peril rather than offering a clean resolution.

How does the episode end?
Officials blame the destruction of the Black Spot on an electrical fire, concealing the mob’s arson and violence. Indigenous elders explain that the entity has consumed enough souls to begin its hibernation and is expected to return in 27 years. That interval is part of the show’s story, not a real-world statistic.
The military storyline takes a darker turn when Hallorann finds a ritual pillar and the military recovers it. Shaw secretly orders the pillar destroyed because he wants to unleash Pennywise across the country and use terror to unite it. Leroy attempts to stop the destruction and is detained.

In the final scene, Will receives a call that sounds like it comes from a grieving Ronnie. The voice changes into Pennywise’s. Will says he is not afraid, but the creature engulfs him in the deadlights. The moment closes the episode on a threat, not an answer about what happens to him next.
Why is the Black Spot fire so devastating?
Stephen King’s It includes the Black Spot fire as a brief, retrospective event. The episode expands it into an extended sequence experienced through characters the audience has come to know. That shift makes the violence personal: the fire is not just a piece of Derry’s history, but a catastrophe unfolding around the people trying to save one another.

The horror also has two sources. Pennywise is a supernatural predator, but the fire begins with deliberate human violence, and the official electrical-fire explanation compounds it by erasing responsibility. Muschietti described his aim for the sequence as creating “an immersive experience of the horror of being inside the Black Spot.” He also characterized the event as a “dramatic low point” that guides the characters toward a pivotal point in the story.
For Hallorann, the supernatural is not limited to Pennywise. Actor Chris Chalk described Dick’s encounters with spirits as an uncontrolled ability to see and commune with the dead, suggesting that the character’s gift can itself be frightening and destabilizing.
