The story also brings cattle rivals, mining interests and Indigenous community members into the conflict.
Territory cast and characters
The actors below play the central Lawsons and the people whose interests collide with theirs. Character details are based on TheWrap’s October 25, 2024 guide; Netflix’s official title page lists the principal cast.
| Actor | Character | Role in the story |
|---|---|---|
| Anna Torv | Emily Lawson (née Hodge) | An ambitious Lawson who wants to run Marianne Station with Graham and their daughter, Susie. Her Hodge family ties connect her to the cattle-theft side of the conflict, and her past with Campbell complicates her place among the rivals. |
| Michael Dorman | Graham Lawson | Colin’s elder son, long overlooked in favor of Daniel. His alcoholism and strained relationships weigh on his effort to take responsibility for the station. |
| Robert Taylor | Colin Lawson | The old-school cattleman and Lawson patriarch, focused on protecting the family legacy. After Daniel’s death, he considers his grandson Marshall as a possible heir. |
| Sam Corlett | Marshall Lawson | Graham’s son from his first marriage. He left the station as a teenager and returns to find himself drawn into the succession struggle. |
| Philippa Northeast | Susie Lawson | Emily and Graham’s independent-minded daughter, who leaves agricultural college to pursue cattle work at Marianne Station. |
| Jake Ryan | Daniel Lawson | Colin’s favored younger son and former heir. His death sets the succession conflict in motion. |
| Clarence Ryan | Nolan Brannock | An Indigenous cattleman who owns Laggan Downs and balances community responsibilities with pressures from the cattle business. |
| Sara Wiseman | Sandra Kirby | A mining magnate from a cattle-family background, with a longstanding dispute with the Lawsons and a plan involving Marianne Station. |
| Joe Klocek | Lachie Kirby | Sandra’s son. His connection with Susie strains his relationship with his mother and complicates the Kirby-Lawson rivalry. |
| Kylah Day | Sharnie Kennedy | A friend and partner in crime to Rich and Marshall; her growing connection with Marshall creates friction in the trio. |
| Sam Delich | Rich Petrakis | Marshall’s fast-talking, law-bending friend, whose self-interest sharpens when he discovers Marshall’s family identity. |
| Dan Wyllie | Hank Hodge | Emily’s brother and a notorious cattle thief who remains loyal to her despite her marriage into the Lawson family. |
| Jay Ryan | Campbell Miller | A cattleman with a past relationship with Emily who wants to win her back and gain Marianne Station. |
| Hamilton Morris | Uncle Bryce | An elder of the Acacia Plains Community and a protector of its traditions. |
| Tyler Spencer | Dezi | A young Indigenous character whom Nolan mentors in cattle-industry work. |
How are the Lawsons related?
Colin is the family patriarch. His sons are Graham and Daniel; Graham is Emily’s husband and Susie’s father. Marshall is Graham’s son from his first marriage, making him Colin’s grandson. Daniel, Colin’s younger son, had been favored as the station’s heir before his death.
- Colin Lawson: father of Graham and Daniel; grandfather of Susie and Marshall.
- Graham Lawson and Emily Lawson: married couple and parents of Susie.
- Marshall Lawson: Graham’s son from an earlier marriage.
- Daniel Lawson: Colin’s younger son and the former expected successor.
Why does Marianne Station cause conflict?
Daniel’s death destabilizes the family’s plans for the cattle station. Graham tries to take the reins, while Colin turns his attention to Marshall as another possible successor. Emily has her own ambition to run the property with Graham, but her Hodge background and history with Campbell tie her to people on the other side of the Lawson dispute.

The struggle does not stay within the family. Sandra Kirby brings mining wealth and an old cattle-family rivalry; Hank Hodge represents cattle theft; Campbell is a competing cattleman. Nolan’s ownership of Laggan Downs and his community obligations give the Indigenous community a distinct stake in the wider events, rather than making the conflict solely a contest among ranching heirs.
