Spoilers for all six episodes of Netflix’s Zero Day. The attack was organized by House Speaker Richard Dreyer, Representative Alex Mullen and their allies in politics and business. They meant to jolt a divided country into unity, not to make money or exact revenge. George Mullen’s defining choice is to expose them—including his daughter—instead of delivering the cover story prepared for his congressional address. The finale leaves the cause of George’s hallucinations unresolved.
Who was behind the Zero Day attack?
Dreyer and a group of lawmakers and business figures conspired to engineer the attack. Alex, George’s daughter, was part of the plot. The show reveals her contact with Dreyer at the end of Episode 5; George learns the truth in Episode 6. The revelation turns his investigation into a family crisis: exposing the conspirators means exposing Alex after the death of his son.
The conspirators’ stated motive was political idealism twisted into a justification for mass harm. They believed a shared national shock could overcome division and legislative gridlock. Co-creator Eric Newman described their thinking to Netflix Tudum: “They weren’t looking for money, they weren’t looking for revenge; they were looking to make the world a better place. And a lot of the worst endeavors in human history begin that way.” Their claimed goal does not undo the deaths and disruption their plan causes.
What is Proteus, and how does the attack work in the show?
In the series’ fictional account, Proteus is a weapon developed by the National Security Agency that can inflict traumatic brain injury remotely while obscuring where the attack came from. The conspirators adapt it for their operation. Monica Kidder’s company helps distribute malware through automatic app updates, and the infected software spreads among phones by Bluetooth, USB and other means.

The show says the app was downloaded on 80% of phones in America. That is an in-story figure reported in Netflix Tudum’s 2025 finale explainer, not a real-world statistic about phone use or cyberattack reach.
Why does George expose Alex in his speech?
George begins his congressional address with a sanitized account of events. A vision of his son prompts him to leave the teleprompter and read Alex’s confession, naming her fellow conspirators. The chamber erupts into chaos, but George walks away having chosen disclosure over protecting his family through concealment.

Newman told Netflix Tudum that the ending is about how lonely it can be to speak the truth when others do not want to hear it—and that a person may be punished for doing so. The speech resolves the central moral conflict, but the series does not show what consequences follow for the named conspirators.
Why does George burn his memoir draft?
After the speech, George burns the draft of his memoir. Co-creator Noah Oppenheim told Netflix Tudum that George understands his decision in the House chamber will define his legacy, making the manuscript obsolete. The gesture also suggests he is no longer trying to control how history remembers him.

What does the final shot of George mean?
The last image shows George jogging and looking out over open water. Oppenheim interpreted it as a man accepting the sacrifice of public service if it means doing the right thing: he may have little left, but he retains his integrity. The scene offers no clear resolution for his marriage. Joan Allen said Sheila may find George’s decision to expose their daughter impossible to accept.
What causes George’s hallucinations?
The ending does not answer this. George sees television host Evan Green appear to speak directly to him, and an object in his bird feeder raises the possibility that someone is interfering with his mind. But the lab finding is only “Debris of indeterminate origin.” Newman said the creators initially assumed Proteus was being used against George, but after watching the finished series he was no longer sure. The show leaves viewers to weigh that possibility against explanations rooted in George’s own mental state; it does not confirm Proteus as the cause or diagnose him with dementia.

Is Zero Day based on a real cyberattack?
Zero Day is a fictional Netflix limited series, not a report of an actual plot or attack. Netflix’s production explainer says the creative team consulted cybersecurity expert Clint Watts and political consultant Eric Schultz; director Lesli Linka Glatter also read Kim Zetter’s Countdown to Zero Day: Stuxnet and the Launch of the World’s First Digital Weapon for inspiration. That context does not establish that Proteus or the series’ specific attack mechanics are real. The creators framed the story around how the United States might react to a catastrophe on the scale of 9/11, not as evidence that this exact scenario is probable.
Netflix lists the series as a six-episode limited series created by Eric Newman, Noah Oppenheim and Michael S. Schmidt. Its official series page provides the episode listings and viewing information; availability can vary by region.
