Critics disagreed about Hillbilly Elegy because they judged different parts of the film differently: some praised its performances and emotional family story, while many found its melodrama, character portrayals and treatment of Appalachia unconvincing. The response was predominantly mixed or negative, not an even split. Metacritic recorded 38/100 from 44 critic reviews, with 14% positive, 50% mixed and 36% negative; those figures describe its sampled reviews, not every critic or viewer. Metacritic’s review record was accessed in 2026.
What critics were responding to
Ron Howard’s 2020 film adapts J.D. Vance’s 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis. Amy Adams plays Vance’s mother, Bev, and Glenn Close plays his grandmother, Mamaw. The story follows Vance’s family across generations, moving between his childhood and a later Yale job interview. TIME’s review describes the film as a mostly straightforward adaptation.
The film arrived after the memoir had become politically prominent. TIME noted that readers had turned to the book seeking to understand Donald Trump’s voter base, while historians and journalists had criticized its portrayal of Appalachia. That context meant reviewers were weighing more than the effectiveness of a family drama: they were also considering how the film represented regional identity, poverty, addiction and personal responsibility. Critics did not all approach those questions with the same expectations or political purpose.
Why some reviewers praised the performances
Positive responses often focused on the actors and the emotional scale of the family story. Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times, in a review listed by Metacritic, called the film “a beautifully constructed, unforgiving, heart-tugging family epic.” Variety’s Owen Gleiberman found the movie most alive when Close was performing, although he had reservations about Adams’s work. The praise shows that critics could respond to particular performances without necessarily agreeing on the film as a whole.

That distinction is captured in Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus: “With the form of an awards-season hopeful but the soul of a bland melodrama, Hillbilly Elegy strands some very fine actors in the not-so-deep South.” The consensus acknowledged the cast while objecting to the material and its execution. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page collects the critics consensus and reviews.
Why many reviews objected to the film
Melodrama and an unfocused story
Some reviewers felt the film piled one crisis on another without making clear what larger idea held them together. Its shifts between Vance’s younger years and the Yale interview struck detractors as unfocused, rather than as a structure that deepened the story. In the Los Angeles Times, Justin Chang criticized the accumulation of crises and questioned the film’s larger purpose. Chang’s review summarized his objection with the line: “Poverty becomes a performance, and complex emotions are reduced to a display of lung power.”

Acting that felt like display rather than empathy
The forceful performances that appealed to some reviewers felt overemphatic to others. Chang allowed that Adams’s performance had raw, affecting moments, but argued that it reduced complex emotion to display. Simran Hans, writing for The Guardian and The Observer, objected that the performances and prosthetics created distance from the characters rather than empathy. Her review put it this way: “The performances create anthropological distance, not human empathy.” Hans’s review also criticized what she saw as flat characterization.
Caricatures and the portrayal of Appalachia
For detractors, the film’s family story did not escape the problem of how it depicted the region around that family. Hans argued that it traded in Appalachian clichés and tried to turn Vance’s experience into a feel-good account of Appalachian values. Against the backdrop of the memoir’s contested, broad claims about the region, some critics saw the movie as repeating stereotypes rather than clarifying the conditions behind poverty and addiction. This criticism concerned the film’s framing and characterization, not simply whether its plot felt moving.

Social and political context left thin
Some critics also objected that the film muted political observations present in the memoir. A Salon roundup reported criticism that the adaptation glossed over that context. For those reviewers, the result was a largely apolitical drama that showed individual hardship without examining broader explanations for it. That is one interpretation of the film’s omissions, not evidence that all critics shared a single political agenda.

The split makes more sense as a disagreement about craft, empathy and the film’s obligations to its subject than as a simple divide between political camps. A reviewer could admire Close or Adams, or accept the basic family story, yet still find the storytelling overwrought or the regional portrait reductive. Conversely, a critic moved by the family drama could judge the film more favorably without resolving the wider debate over how it depicts Appalachia.

Rotten Tomatoes described the film as a “bland melodrama,” while Roeper’s more favorable response called it a family epic. Those sharply different descriptions point to the central fault line: whether the film’s heightened emotion made the Vance family’s struggles affecting, or turned them into spectacle. The Metacritic breakdown—half mixed reviews, alongside more negative than positive reviews—shows why “divided” needs qualification: there was meaningful disagreement, but the recorded response leaned unfavorable.
