The original ER cast went on to very different careers: Noah Wyle is starring in the medical drama The Pitt, while George Clooney, Julianna Margulies, Anthony Edwards, Eriq La Salle and Sherry Stringfield built substantial work in film and television. The series ran for 15 seasons, so this is a guide to its best-known original stars and selected later cast members—not a complete update on every actor who appeared.
What happened to the original ER cast?
ER aired on NBC from September 19, 1994, through April 2, 2009. It ran for 15 seasons and 331 episodes, following a large, changing ensemble at the fictional County General Hospital. The Television Academy records 124 Primetime Emmy nominations and 23 wins for the series.
The actors’ post-show paths span starring roles, film work, directing, producing and writing. The career details below distinguish documented past credits from confirmed current work; an older credit list does not establish what someone is doing today.
Noah Wyle — John Carter
Wyle, who played medical student and doctor John Carter for much of the series, returned to medical drama as the star and an executive producer of The Pitt. HBO Max announced on January 8, 2026, that it had renewed the series for a third season ahead of season two’s debut. The Television Academy lists Wyle among the show’s 2025 and 2026 acting winners. HBO Max’s renewal announcement and the Television Academy’s awards record substantiate those updates.

Clooney left ER during its fifth season and returned for the final season. His later screen work includes the television series Catch-22 as well as a continuing film career. These are examples from a September 2024 retrospective, not a full account of his current projects. TVLine’s 2024 cast retrospective recounts his departure and return.
Anthony Edwards — Mark Greene
After playing Dr. Mark Greene, Edwards appeared in television series including Zero Hour, Law & Order: True Crime, WeCrashed, Designated Survivor and Inventing Anna. Us Weekly also describes producing and directing work. These are post-ER credits, not a verified list of his present projects. Julianna Margulies — Carol Hathaway
Margulies followed ER with prominent roles in The Good Wife, The Hot Zone and The Morning Show. Us Weekly also notes her memoir and other biographical details. Those titles describe her career after ER; they should not be read as a current-project slate. TVLine’s 2024 retrospective lists the series credits, while Us Weekly covers her writing.
Eriq La Salle — Peter Benton
La Salle returned as Dr. Peter Benton for the show’s final season. His work beyond acting includes television directing and novels, according to Us Weekly. He also reunited with former ER co-star Gloria Reuben in the 2022 film A Second Chance at Love, noted in TVLine’s retrospective. These dated examples show a career extending behind the camera and into writing without implying a current project. TVLine and Us Weekly provide the career details.

That statement describes the period covered by the report; it does not establish her status after September 2024. TVLine’s dated retrospective is the basis for both the credits and that time-qualified note.

Maura Tierney — Abby Lockhart

That supports a dated later connection, not a complete inventory of her work in 2026. See Us Weekly’s cast roundup and the Television Academy’s ER page.
Alex Kingston, Goran Višnjić and Laura Cerón
Us Weekly’s retrospective follows these actors’ later television and film credits as well. Us Weekly’s retrospective includes the selected cast members.

Why there is no single answer for the whole ER cast
Across 15 seasons, ER had a large ensemble whose membership changed over time. A story about the original stars cannot also serve as a comprehensive status report on every regular, guest actor and recurring character. The clearest verified present-tense update here is Wyle’s role on The Pitt; most of the other examples are dated credits or retrospective reporting. For the series’ central cast, Amblin’s show page names George Clooney, Anthony Edwards, Noah Wyle, Julianna Margulies, Eriq La Salle and Sherry Stringfield.
