Marcus Freeman’s wife is Joanna Freeman. Notre Dame identifies her by first name in its official profile and lists the couple’s six children; the university’s feature on their family offers a glimpse of how they navigate game days and the demands of a coaching household.
Who is Joanna Freeman?
Joanna Freeman is the wife of Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame’s head football coach. The university’s official athletics profile identifies her as Joanna and names the couple’s children, but it does not provide a fuller biography. Notre Dame’s staff profile is the best-supported source for those family details.
Notre Dame’s 2022 feature describes Joanna and Marcus as college sweethearts. In that feature, Joanna speaks about the practical work of getting their family ready for a game and the mutual support that comes with Marcus’s coaching career. The university’s feature is the source for her remarks.
What is known about Joanna’s background?
Additional biographical details come from secondary reporting rather than Notre Dame’s official profile. Us Weekly reported in January 2026 that Joanna formerly worked as a reporter for WBNS-Channel 10. Its family guide also describes the couple as having met while Marcus attended Ohio State and Joanna attended a nearby college.

She also characterizes family life candidly: “It’s chaotic and we have highs and lows, but we just always tell the kids to work hard and be kind.” Marcus, in the same feature, credits her support: “She’s a supportive woman, a supportive wife and I couldn’t do this thing without her.” These remarks are from Notre Dame’s feature on the Freeman family.
