Use FFmpeg to publish a media source into a MediaMTX path, then configure MediaMTX to forward that path to YouTube Live. In Docker, keep MediaMTX’s YAML configuration on the host, expose only the listener ports your design uses, and use YouTube’s current Stream URL and stream key. This gives you a flexible relay, but it does not guarantee the broadcast will survive every container, network, or account failure.

How the Docker workflow fits together

The data path is media source → FFmpeg → MediaMTX path → YouTube Live ingest. FFmpeg reads a file or other source and publishes it to MediaMTX. MediaMTX then forwards that incoming path to YouTube. MediaMTX describes itself as a live media server and proxy for publishing, reading, proxying, recording, and playback; its ability to serve an always-available stream while a publisher is offline is not an end-to-end uptime guarantee.

The examples below are based on the projects’ documented configuration and publishing patterns; they are not a report of a tested deployment. They assume the containers can reach one another and that your media is compatible with YouTube’s current ingest requirements.

Choose the publishing protocol and Docker network

MediaMTX supports FFmpeg publishing over RTSP, RTMP, SRT, WebRTC, MPEG-TS, and RTP. Its FFmpeg publishing guide recommends RTSP. It also documents an RTMP example, so use the protocol that fits your FFmpeg build, MediaMTX listener configuration, and container network.

Choice Documented approach What to check
RTSP MediaMTX’s recommended FFmpeg publishing method; example listener uses port 8554. That the listener is enabled and reachable from the FFmpeg process.
RTMP MediaMTX provides an FFmpeg publishing example using port 1935. That the RTMP listener is enabled and reachable from the FFmpeg process.
SRT, WebRTC, MPEG-TS, or RTP Listed as supported publishing protocols. Confirm the exact listener settings, ports, and FFmpeg options for your deployment; the cited examples do not establish a universal latency or quality advantage.

If FFmpeg and MediaMTX run in separate containers, localhost inside the FFmpeg container refers to that container, not the MediaMTX container. On a shared Docker network, address MediaMTX by its service or container name and the listening port. If FFmpeg runs on the host, use a host address and publish the required MediaMTX port. Expose only the protocols and ports the workflow actually uses; MediaMTX’s Docker example publishes several, including RTSP 8554 and RTMP 1935.

Keep MediaMTX configuration outside the container

The MediaMTX Docker guide describes downloading a mediamtx.yml file to a local directory, mounting that directory in the container, and using it as the working directory. A mounted file remains editable on the host and makes the active configuration easier to inspect and back up.

The guide also documents environment overrides using MTX_ followed by an uppercase parameter name; nested map values use underscores, and lists can use numeric positions. Configuration can alternatively be managed through the Control API. MediaMTX says configuration changes are hot-reloaded without disconnecting existing clients whenever possible, not in every case.

The configuration reference consulted identifies itself as MediaMTX v1.21.1. Choose and record an intentional image version rather than assuming a floating tag will always refer to the same build. Validate your configuration before startup with the documented --validate-conf option.

Configure the YouTube forwarding path

  1. Open YouTube Live’s Go Live interface. Retrieve the current Stream URL and stream key shown for your broadcast. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not put it in public examples, screenshots, or version control.
  2. Set up a MediaMTX path. Configure the path that will receive FFmpeg’s publication and its forwarding destination to YouTube. MediaMTX documents placing the stream key after the destination URL with a # separator.
  3. Use the current secure ingest address. MediaMTX recommends changing rtmp:// to rtmps:// for encryption in transit. Its guide’s example, rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2#streamKey, is explicitly time-sensitive; do not assume that endpoint is still current. The same guide noted a certificate problem at its last check and showed a destFingerprint workaround. Verify the present endpoint and certificate behavior before using any fingerprint value.
  4. Validate before going live. Run MediaMTX’s configuration validation before startup. Keep the key private in whichever configuration method you use, including environment variables or the Control API.

MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding instructions warn that YouTube requires both audio and video tracks and that video-only streams are silently rejected. Check that your source supplies both. If it does not, configure FFmpeg to provide a valid audio track where appropriate; the documented requirement is for a track, not necessarily audible program material.

Start MediaMTX and publish a looping file

  1. Prepare the host configuration directory. Save the MediaMTX YAML configuration there and mount it into the container as described in the Docker guide. Configure the incoming path and YouTube forwarding destination before starting.
  2. Expose the selected listener. Make the RTSP or RTMP port reachable from FFmpeg. Publish only the listener port needed for your chosen design.
  3. Validate and start MediaMTX. Use --validate-conf to check the configuration before running the container. Review the container logs at startup for configuration or listener errors.
  4. Publish the file from FFmpeg. MediaMTX documents this RTSP pattern for looping a file indefinitely in real time:
    ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f rtsp rtsp://localhost:8554/mystream

Replace file.mp4 and the destination address and path with your actual source and reachable MediaMTX path. The example uses -re to read at real-time speed and -stream_loop -1 to repeat the input indefinitely. If FFmpeg is in a different container, replace localhost with the MediaMTX service name or other address reachable on the Docker network.

  5. Check the media before relying on stream copy. The example’s -c copy passes through the source streams rather than transcoding. The example does not establish that every file’s codecs or tracks are suitable for YouTube. Inspect the source and confirm the resulting audio and video are accepted; if not, select compatible FFmpeg encoding settings for your media and current YouTube requirements.
  6. Confirm the live state. Review MediaMTX logs and metrics as appropriate, and check YouTube’s live preview or status. Confirm that both tracks arrive and that the broadcast is actually live.

Prevent common failures and recover deliberately

  • FFmpeg cannot connect to MediaMTX: check that the selected listener is enabled, the correct port is reachable, and the address is valid from FFmpeg’s network namespace. A container’s localhost is not another container.
  • YouTube does not accept the stream: check that the Stream URL and key match the current YouTube Live interface, that the destination uses the current endpoint, and that certificate validation has not been bypassed using an obsolete fingerprint.
  • The stream appears to publish but YouTube does not go live: verify both audio and video tracks reach the forwarding path. MediaMTX’s forwarding guide says video-only streams are silently rejected.
  • A loop stops or fails at startup: confirm the input path exists inside the FFmpeg container, the file can be read, and the command uses the intended source and path. Check whether stream copy is suitable for the source codecs.
  • A configuration edit has no effect: confirm the mounted host file is the one the container reads, validate the syntax, and inspect the logs. Hot reload is supported where possible, but do not assume every change takes effect without reconnecting or restarting.
  • The stream drops after a host or network interruption: inspect the FFmpeg and MediaMTX process state, container logs, network reachability, and YouTube status. MediaMTX can route and forward streams, but the documented features do not establish automatic recovery from every upstream or infrastructure failure.

Choose where the always-on workload runs

A Docker setup stays online only while its host, containers, media source, network path, and YouTube publishing session remain available. Run it on a machine or server you can keep powered and connected, and account for maintaining the containers and protecting the stream key. The documentation reviewed does not establish a universal bandwidth estimate, hosting price, or uptime figure for this topology.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can FFmpeg publish to MediaMTX using RTMP instead of RTSP?

Yes. MediaMTX documents an RTMP publishing example as an alternative; make sure the RTMP listener and port are reachable from FFmpeg.

Does MediaMTX itself keep YouTube live if FFmpeg stops?

No such end-to-end guarantee is established by the documented always-available stream capability. A YouTube broadcast depends on the full publishing and forwarding chain.
