For one video or capture source going straight to YouTube Live, start with FFmpeg. It reads media, encodes or converts it, and publishes to a stream destination. Add NGINX RTMP when you need a server to accept, relay, or distribute incoming streams; it can work with FFmpeg, but it does not replace an encoder when conversion is needed. Neither tool alone guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.
What is the difference between NGINX RTMP and FFmpeg?
FFmpeg: read, convert, and publish media
FFmpeg is a media converter that can read files, network streams, and live capture inputs, then write an output to a URL. For a simple YouTube broadcast, it can send the source directly to YouTube using the ingest endpoint and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. It can also transcode video or audio and adjust output parameters. The FFmpeg project documents an RTMP output-recovery option using the FIFO muxer, which can keep processing through temporary network failures and retry output recovery; exact behavior depends on the installed build and configuration. That is not operating-system process supervision or a guarantee of end-to-end availability. FFmpeg documentation
NGINX RTMP: accept and relay streams
The third-party nginx-rtmp-module adds live-streaming functions to NGINX, including RTMP push and pull, recording, statistics, multi-worker publishing, and hooks that can run FFmpeg. It is useful when NGINX needs to accept an incoming stream and relay it to YouTube or other internal consumers. NGINX Plus separately documents a packaged RTMP module supporting RTMP, HLS, and DASH, with operating-system and package availability constraints. These are distinct offerings: check the current maintenance status, version, and platform support for whichever module you consider. nginx-rtmp-module documentation
Using them together
A source can publish to NGINX RTMP, which can use an exec hook to start FFmpeg for transcoding or another output. This suits relay-and-transform designs, but adds another component and configuration surface. The module README’s example is illustrative, not a complete hardened production configuration. nginx-rtmp-module documentation

Which should you use for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Send one file or capture source to YouTube | FFmpeg | It reads media, can encode or convert it, and publishes to an output URL. |
| Accept an incoming RTMP stream and redistribute it | NGINX RTMP | The module documents live applications and push/pull relay. |
| Send a source to multiple destinations or internal consumers | NGINX RTMP; add FFmpeg if conversion is needed | Relay and fan-out fit the server role; FFmpeg handles conversion. |
| Change resolution, codecs, or audio before YouTube | FFmpeg | It supports video and audio transcoding and parameter changes. |
| Run a resilient 24/7 service | Either, with external supervision and monitoring | Tool choice alone does not ensure uptime. FFmpeg has documented output recovery support, while YouTube recommends stream-health monitoring and failover tests. |
These are role-based architecture recommendations, not the result of a controlled head-to-head benchmark. The available documentation does not establish comparative latency, CPU use, cost, or uptime for this specific YouTube setup.
Can FFmpeg stream to YouTube directly?
Yes. Set FFmpeg’s output to YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key, and choose settings compatible with the resolution and codec you intend to send. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and supports up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Follow YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the selected resolution and codec. These are encoder settings recommendations, not guarantees of viewing quality or performance. The exact requirement depends on the output format and the current YouTube guidance.
Do you need NGINX RTMP for YouTube Live?
No, not for a single FFmpeg-compatible source sent to one YouTube destination. NGINX RTMP is appropriate when you need an ingest or relay layer—for example, one local source feeding several destinations or consumers. If you only need FFmpeg to change the source and publish it to YouTube, NGINX adds a server you may not need. If you do add it, plan how each component is configured, monitored, and restarted.

How do you keep an FFmpeg YouTube stream running?
Treat a 24/7 broadcast as an operating service, not simply a long-running command. FFmpeg’s output recovery options can address some temporary network interruptions, but they do not restart a crashed process, restore a failed source, or verify that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Plan separately for supervision, monitoring, network capacity, secure credentials, and recovery.
Configure the YouTube ingest
- Create or configure the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Get the ingest endpoint and stream key there. Use RTMPS where your encoder and workflow support it; YouTube describes it as RTMP over TLS/SSL for encrypted transmission. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or public repositories. YouTube RTMPS guidance · YouTube live encoder setup
- Set the output format. Choose a supported codec and resolution, use CBR, and set a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds, following YouTube’s guidance for the selected codec and resolution. For H.264, the cited recommendations are 10 Mbps at 1080p30, 17 Mbps at 1080p60, and 8 Mbps at 720p30 or 720p60. Check YouTube’s current table before deployment because guidance can change. YouTube encoder settings
- Allow upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the stream’s bitrate. If running primary and backup streams, account for both bitrates in the connection capacity. A connection that is barely fast enough can be disrupted by network variation. YouTube live streaming tips
- Use output recovery and process supervision for different failure classes. FFmpeg’s documented FIFO muxer example can retry output recovery after temporary network failures, subject to build and option details. Separately arrange for a service manager or equivalent to restart the FFmpeg process if it exits, and alert someone when it repeatedly fails. Verify the exact options in the documentation for the installed FFmpeg version. FFmpeg format and muxer documentation
- Preview, monitor, and test failure recovery. Use representative audio and motion, preview in Live Control Room, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages. Test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirm the recovery path works as intended. YouTube live streaming tips
Account for continuous-stream limits and latency
YouTube’s encoder setup page states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single nominally continuous event will be archived indefinitely; verify the current platform policy and design the broadcast workflow around it. YouTube live encoder setup

Latency is a separate choice from reliability. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering. If a stream has no audience interaction, minimizing latency may matter less than maintaining stable playback. YouTube encoder settings
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and how to diagnose them
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder is using the current ingest endpoint and the correct stream key from Live Control Room, then confirm the output is active and the destination is reachable. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.
- Stream health reports instability or viewers buffer: Compare the actual output bitrate with available upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and include backup bitrate if a second stream is active. Check the connection for interruptions rather than assuming the encoder alone is at fault.
- The stream stops after an interruption: Determine whether the FFmpeg process exited or whether only its output connection failed. Output recovery options address temporary output failures; a process supervisor is needed to restart an exited process. Check logs and test the recovery path under controlled conditions.
- The stream looks or sounds wrong: Confirm the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, and keyframe interval in the outgoing stream, then preview representative content in Live Control Room. Change one setting at a time and recheck stream health.
- NGINX accepts the source but YouTube receives nothing: Trace the relay path one hop at a time: verify that the source publishes to the intended NGINX application, that the relay or FFmpeg hook is running, and that its output points to the correct YouTube destination. The module’s sample configuration is not a production hardening guide.
